The Meeting of Minds

  • Hello team!

I have been meaning to get a meeting set up to discuss some important items and there never seems to be a time that works. I need to just get it on the calendar and go from there! In the meantime, I have some items that I would like to review as we head into week 4 of the mod.

As you all know, Athena is leaving next week and as truly heartbreaking as it is, I am so proud of her and the opportunity she has created to grow her career. I believe that Athena has been an inspiration to us all and an absolute embodiment of the I CARE values. Athena, you will be deeply missed!

Orientation is next week, and we are going to switch it up just a bit. I know originally, we wanted to make the orientation more "get to know you" type-thing; however, we have discovered that laying out the foundations and the facts of your program, is really what the focus needs to be. You do not need to go through a whole Canvas tutorial but reminding them how to log in and any particular specifics is going to be important. Also a few things are especially important. To help me remember them, I used to call them The "A's to A's. Attitude, Attendance and Assignments, Attire. I would then break them down to cover specifics.

Attitude- be positive. Approach adversity with a growth mindset and be kind.

Attendance- understanding the attendance policy, the schedule and basic foundation of the "wheel". I would also take this opportunity to discuss moving to the day for the final mods and externship.

Assignments: Syllabus, rubrics, grading policy, expectations

Attire: dress code and the rules. Cell phones, drinks, food etc.

I will send out a revamped checklist to follow. I am more than confident that each of you know what you’re doing; however, it’s been awhile since we did the breakout sessions and a reminder doesn’t hurt. Also, keep track of the things that work and don’t work and lets chat about them before the next orientation. My goal is to make this as stress-free as possible.

Another item I want to bring to your attention is classroom surveys. John, Kelli and I meet after each term to discuss the surveys and things that students say or recommend that could improve their classroom experience. It is important that you review each of the surveys and that the instructors are turning them into you. This is not to be a “check the box” type-deal, this is something that should be looked at constructively to give you a different perspective into your program. You’re not always going to agree with the comments, and some of them you may feel inclined to take personally- but that’s not our job. Our job is to be objective and do everything in our power to improve the program for our students and our instructors.

OK- on to the next one. Retention comments. It is critical that retention comments are being left . I promise I can leave you a lone a whole lot less if you make sure your instructors are leaving retention comments. They also assist us in the registrars not erroneously or prematurely dropping our students.

Another thing I would like to bring to the table are the PD schedules. PD’s have a fair bit of flexibility when it comes to their schedules. I have an ask though- if you are going to be in later than 9am, I need to know about it. At 9am, the campus is in full swing and there are several students looking for their PD’s even if they do not have class that day. I at least just need to know when you will be there. The same goes if you are leaving before 5pm. Our night classes begin at 6pm and I understand that some of you do not have night classes, however, that does not mean your students do not just show up looking for you. This will allow me to address situations when I am presented with them and inform the students or other staff whether you are here or not. I have to do the same to my supervisors and it is a courtesy so that we can all work in unison and ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. Lastly, the majority of you already do this, but a reminder that anytime you’re out in the field, I also need to know about it. It’s helpful on many levels when pre sites and mid points are documented.

Finally, April is a busy month for me and I will be out of the office next week Thursday and will be returning on Tuesday. I know it is not ideal with orientation, and I sincerely apologize for that. I also have the D.O.E. summit April 23rd and 24th. I am also supposed to be on PTO April 25th. After that, I should be relatively free again until July.

I appreciate all of you so much! I could not do anything I do without each and every one of you.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the week and as always, let me know what I can do to make your day a little bit easier.
