A woman’s desperate search for her missing husband leads to an opium den—and a beggar with a horrifyingly twisted face. Can Holmes uncover the truth behind the disguise?

“It is quite a three-pipe problem, and I beg that you won't speak to me for fifty minutes.” — Sherlock Holmes

The Man with the Twisted Lip

When Mrs. St. Clair bursts into the opium den on Upper Swandam Lane, she glimpses her vanished husband in a window—only for him to vanish again without a trace. The only clue? A grotesque beggar with a horribly twisted lip. As Holmes probes deeper, he uncovers a case riddled with false identities, hidden lives, and a clever masquerade hiding in plain sight. In this bizarre and brilliant tale, appearances deceive, and even the most grotesque may conceal a surprising truth.

This chapter reveals Holmes’s flair for human insight, highlighting how even the strangest cases may hide the simplest answers—if you know where to look.
