  • What Are You Still Carrying? A Leadership Lesson from a Zen Story
    Mar 16 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Sometimes the most powerful leadership lessons come from the simplest stories.

In this episode of the Leadership Vision Podcast, Brian and Linda share a short Zen parable that surfaced during a coaching conversation with a client. The story, originally from Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth, is about two traveling monks, a frustrated young woman, and a moment that reveals how easily we hold on to things longer than we should.

As Nathan, Linda, and Brian unpack the story together, the conversation turns toward a deeper question for leaders and teams:

What are we still carrying that we should have set down hours ago?

The parable opens up a thoughtful discussion about perspective, emotional awareness, leadership mindset, and the subtle ways our interpretations of events shape the culture around us.

Along the way, the team explores how each character in the story reflects different leadership tendencies—and how recognizing those patterns can help leaders grow in awareness and compassion.

It’s a short story, but one that invites a powerful moment of reflection.

    Reflection Questions for Leaders

As you listen, consider these questions:

    • What situation am I still carrying that I could let go of?
    • Which character in the story do I relate to most right now?
    • Am I amplifying a challenge that may actually be smaller than I think?
    • Who is walking alongside me on my leadership journey?

  • Leading Through Challenge, Change, Uncertainty
    Mar 9 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Leaders today are navigating a world shaped by challenge, change, and uncertainty — often all at once.

But here’s the problem: most of us treat these three experiences as if they’re the same thing.

    They’re not.

In this episode of The Leadership Vision Podcast, Nathan, Brian, and Linda explore why distinguishing between challenge, change, and uncertainty is essential for leading well — especially in seasons of disruption, stress, and ambiguity.

Drawing from neuroscience, behavioral research, and 25 years of consulting experience, they offer practical questions and frameworks leaders can use immediately with their teams.

    In This Episode

    You’ll learn:

    • The critical difference between challenge, change, and uncertainty
    • Why leaders often respond to all three the same way — and why that doesn’t work
    • How challenge reinforces confidence and competence
    • Why change requires intentional pivots and seasonal awareness
    • What uncertainty does to the human brain — and how to respond wisely
    • Four powerful questions to help teams move forward in the fog

    Key Distinctions

    Challenge
A stretch — but within your existing capacity.
You already have what you need. It requires grit and focus.

    Change
    An interruption or redirection.
It requires letting go, adapting, and growing in new ways.

    Uncertainty
    A state of not knowing.
Limited clarity. Limited predictability. Emotional fog.

Each requires a different leadership response.

    Practical Questions for Leaders

When facing uncertainty, ask your team:

    1. What do you need to understand?
    2. What do you need to commit?
    3. What do you need to adjust?
    4. How will you take action?

    When facing change, consider:

    • What season are we in — spring, summer, fall, or winter?
    • Where does each team member naturally come to life during change?
    • What might need to be released before we move forward?

    When facing challenge, ask:

    • Have we done something like this before?
    • What strengths have helped us succeed?
    • What’s at the “end of the trail” that motivates us?

    A Reflection for This Week

Before you respond to what feels difficult, ask:

Is this a challenge to grow through?
    A change to adapt to?
    Or an uncertainty to navigate?

The answer may determine how you lead.

    Mar 2 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

What happens when service begins in the heart and is sustained by the brain?

In this episode, Nathan Freeburg sits down with Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring to explore why service is more than an obligation—it’s a formative leadership practice. Together, they unpack:

    • Why the future of work is emotional
    • What neuroscience teaches us about empathy and compassion
    • How service expands (rather than depletes) our capacity
    • The connection between service, identity, and personal “maps”
    • Why leaders must model being the “lead servant”

Through personal stories and practical insight, this conversation shows how service reshapes both individuals and teams—and why it may be one of the most important practices for emotionally healthy leadership.

  • Executive Leadership Strategy: Why Presence Matters More Than Performance
    Feb 23 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Strategy isn’t just about plans and execution. In this episode, we explore a deeper framework for executive leadership — one rooted in presence, growth, and resources.

In high-pressure environments filled with distraction and complexity, leaders are often pulled in multiple directions. Instead of reacting faster, what if executive strategy began with slowing down long enough to see clearly?

    We discuss:

    • Why presence is the foundation of executive leadership
    • How distraction impacts decision-making and team culture
    • The difference between performance improvement and true leadership growth
    • Why awareness, compassion, and curiosity are essential for executive formation
    • How to redefine “resources” beyond money, time, and headcount
    • Moving from a scarcity mindset to recognizing abundance
    • What it means for a leader to become a resource for others
“Leadership begins with presence, the ability to see clearly where we are and what is real.”

“There is an abundance of resources to solve our problems and ways to pursue our challenges.”

This conversation offers practical insight for executive leaders navigating pressure, change, and organizational complexity — and invites you to rethink strategy from the inside out.
