  • 110: Bright Disaster (Mystery grab bag!)(not really: Mewgenics, Ichor, Iliad, Solani)
    Mar 16 2026
Hi all! Sometimes you gotta be informal, amirite? I mean, there's the episode you prepare, you take notes for, and it ends up being mightily fine. Some other times you don't prepare for it, and the unique combination of naivety, earnestness and relaxation makes for something special... a special kind of disaster, that is. This is one such peculiar episode (I wonder how we end up still having listeners after these intros). I think the team really has to thank Cara for the effort she puts into it. In Italy they say "perle ai porci", which roughly translates "pearls to pigs", to indicate when someone gifts you something nice and you are so unable to appreciate it that it's utterly wasted. After all, you have to talk in the same episode about eugenics and human minorities, what could go wrong? Hey, we all have THAT episode. And THAT is THIS one. The episode begins pretty normal (normal for the course, that is) with a Standee Catch-up, then it's Fen talking about a Steam game (board-adjacent) they defined "KDM-esque", Mewgenics!, and something something about news in Magic: The Gathering - it must have to do with the new set about Ninja Turtles and why it is not as terrible as the communal judgment would have it. Sometimes, I wish I had notes. Then it's Alessio, who talks about two reasonably recent Knizia classics, Ichor and Iliad, and explains us his preference. Whatever that means. It's mostly speaking ill of cloth mats. And you know what does NOT have cloth mats? Cara's game. With its more culturally appropriate neoprene. Nah, I'm joking. Cara is the one who was actually prepared, remember? Hey, there's no 'I' in 'team'. And apparently, there is none in 'Standee' either. But a man can dream...

  • 109: Archetypal Re-sources (Neta-tanka, Bubzium, The Old King's Crown)
    Mar 2 2026
In the end, we are all either Standees or Meeples. It's just that "meeple" is kind of trademarked. No, really, go checking if you need. Done? Well, welcome to episode 109 of The Last Standee Podcast! In the grand scheme of things, we belong to the standee category. Mostly copy-left, done with whatever arts&craft project brought us into existence. It was messy. Anyway! This is the episode where we talk about sources and resources! After the usual catch-up, we have Cara talk about Neta-tanka, a resource management game with some noteworthy mechanichs she... liked? Disliked? Look, it's complicated. That's why she made a review. It has to do with archetypes. Everything has. It's the meeple/standee thing from above, cranked up to "existential". But speaking of archetypes, there's Alexis with Bubzium, the next great sourcebook from Hollow Press, you'll remember them from Vermis, maybe. Anyway, I won't even start describing it here, because words will fail the experience. All we can comfortably say is that Hollow Press found their niche, and comfortably so. We kept the dessert for last. Mix in resources, and a good source worldbuilding, in the archetypal old kingdom, to talk about The Old King's Crown with Alessio, a dear, endearing game from late summer 2025 which is getting on and off the BGG Hotness these last days. Good timing you say? Remember that the day right after this episode is out, the "reprint + expansion" campaign will start! Hey-hey, you are welcome! As usual, happy gaming until next time!

  • 108: Initiatives in Inferno (Cosmere RPG, Splittermond RPG, Dante's Inferno)
    Feb 14 2026
Hello loyal listeners, hope you like discussing RPGs and Initiatives, because if that's the case, you are in for a treat! Presenting team today is Fen, Audrey and Cara! Right after the usual Standee Catch-up, we have Audrey discuss The Cosmere Roleplaying Game System, one which we could define "a system with a plan", err, "a plot" - a fresh take on familiar d20-based mechanics. After that, we have a first attempt to bring the familiar format of "Cara's Reviews Corner" to RPGs with Splittermond, a spiritual successor to The Dark Eye RPG - how did she go? I guess I'll discover it with you! Finally, Fen brings back the boardgames with a review of Dante's Inferno. Where's the initiative, you ask? Oh, simply EVERYWHERE. Listen to the episode, you'll discover soon enough!

  • 107: Two's Company, Three's a Crowd (2 Top 3)
    Feb 2 2026
Hello and welcome to episode 107! Which has been TAKEN OVER with a REFRESHING NEW course! What can I say, I love Cara's artistic direction. She got the perfect title for an episode where two people discuss two different top threes - a mini special, if you want. In these cases, courtesy dictactes that I don't spoil anything of the games discussed here, so we'll keep it generic: it is adorable to have someone hosting without notes, don't you think? So, after the usual Standee Catch-up and THE FIRST EVER PRODUCT PLACEMENT OF A WATER BOTTLE IN A BOARDGAME PODCAST, we get to the actual content of the episode. I feel like I should be preparing you for it, but on the other hand there's no way you can be prepared for what follows. Just brace yourselves, because there are a lot of 2s and 3s. The episode is 2 top 3s from our 2 hosts, Cara and another guy she forgot about almost immediately (a thing that, it appears obvious, the guy is very ready to forgive and move on) are discussing their top 3 eye candy games, for a reason or another. The 2nd top 3 is where we cheat a little - it's "games we played we wish we could play more" with some twist, the first twist being that Cara brought 3 distinct top 3s there. The other guy just has 3 games. Special episodes are fun to make - hopefully they are fun to listen too! Anyway, until next episode, CYA!

  • 106: Unquackable (Grimcoven, Dark Romance, Toy Battle, Unstoppable)
    Jan 17 2026
Sometimes, an episode recording goes south. Maybe it takes the entire episode or waits for the weekend, but it happens. There's no Last Standee anymore, only Unquackable. Do you expect me to write a synopsis of... this? Fine, I'll try. We begin with a Standee Catch-up, par for the course. Then Fen does a recollection of a lot of stuff (Seance of the Blake Manor - wishlisted on Steam!), but mostly talks about Grimcoven and snow (unrelated). Then - oh dear how I missed those - it's time for the irregular space of Cara's Reviews, with Dark Romance. Listen to it! It's maybe a bit long, but it's highly educational. Then, Alessio has 10 minutes to finish with Toy Battle and Unstoppable. No worries, maybe it can still be done... but you really should keep Fen away from photo editors during that time. Now all I see are Toy Battle rubber duckies - everywhere. You cannot stop the quacking. It's UNQUACKABLE. ...so we publish this out of schedule, because the cake is a lie and all there is is QUACK.

  • 105: Saturday Morning Cartoons (Trenchcoat Raccoons, Hot Streak, Magical Athlete)
    Nov 24 2025
Hello and welcome to episode 105 of The Last Standee Podcast! Nothing to say, you must be really, really patient with us to bear such confusion in episode descriptions if you are still there, but let me explain. I know the podcast is out on Mondays and it says "Saturday Morning", but if you go into the detail of the games talked about, there is a "saturday morning cartoons" vibe, or at least that's what we say ourselves when we pat our backs congratulating on the title. Truth to be told, we just recorded this one on a Saturday Morning and all games are cartoon-themed, so see? Brilliant! Anyway. The episode starts with the usual Standee Catch-up where we learn useful insight about how to paint ginger/redheads on miniatures without them looking like fiery aliens (much appreciated!), then we start vibing with Audrey talking us about Trenchcoat Raccoons, your unusual one-off TTRPG project of the week (fortnight?). Then it's Alessio's turn to bring up that weird phase in CMYK games' publisher history when they decide to put out in a short sequence two weirdly competing, weird titles about races: Hot Streak and Magical Athlete. All of this, while our heroes waited for Alexis - little they knew at the time, but... See you next time!

  • 104: Card Combos, Cursed Critters (Eternal Decks, Here to Slay, King of Tokyo Duel)
    Oct 26 2025
A spooky welcome to Episode 104 of The Last Standee Podcast! This episode we explore curses, critters and cursed critters which also curse you! But let us get our curse-words (Inigo Montoya vibes here: you keep saying that word - I don't think it means what you think it means) sorted! First, there's our Standee Catch-up with Cara and Alessio, then Alessio breaks ice with Eternal Decks, an excellent scenario-based coop card game by Hiroken seeing first reprint right these days, then Cara goes with Here to Slay, the Unstable Unicorns sequel that nods a bit to Munchkin (but also has some good things going its way). Finally, Alessio and Cara talk about King of Tokyo Duel, the last (next to last, now that Essen SPIEL has come and gone there's Mindbug King of Tokyo) iteration of the franchise, which brings some very welcome fresh air to the known and loved concept of the game. And I think here we are: there are cards, combos, critters and curses - episode's done! See you next episode!

  • 103: Beer murdered the paradox (The Red Dragon Inn, Cara's Murder Mystery, Anachrony)
    Oct 12 2025
Hi Last Standee fans! Welcome to Episode 103! You know, sometimes it's difficult to find an episode title that feels smart and has a relevance to all the topics and it's not just cacophonic. I think this episode's title it's a testament to that. I went for a "Video killed the radio star" vibe, but I didn't quite get there. Oh well! In this episode we have a heartfelt Standee Catch-up with the gang, then Fen starts right away with The Red Dragon Inn - you know it's a good one because this is a topic that they wanted to bring up for a long time (I mean, it's no Tiny Towns, but the game is stupid fun in the right hands), then Cara's there with something I am positive she called a "murder party" or something very ominously on that line, but she really meant "murder mystery". Which murder? Which mystery? Don't ask me, I'm just an intro - listen to the episode! We finish strong with Audrey and Anachrony, the heaviest game about time paradoxes and resource management we all know and love! Now that you mention it, it might be that Audrey has a thing for time machines. And swift as we started, we are at the end of the episode. What would the second E stand this time, for the one hundred and third time? No spoilers, but this time it just barely made it! Until next episode, remember, the second "E" in "episode" stands for "E".
