Episode 5 — The Isdal Woman Mystery

Bergen, Norway. November 1970.

When hikers discovered the burned body of a woman in a remote valley outside the city of Bergen, police initially believed it might be a tragic suicide. But as investigators began examining the scene, the case quickly became far more mysterious.

The woman carried no identification. Labels had been removed from her clothing. And hidden inside two suitcases discovered at a nearby train station were wigs, coded notes, and hotel records from cities across Europe.

Witnesses later reported seeing the woman travelling under multiple false names, frequently changing her appearance and speaking several languages.

More than fifty years later, her identity is still unknown.

In this episode of Shadows of Crime, we explore the discovery in Norway’s Isdalen Valley, the strange clues found among the woman’s belongings, and the theories that suggest she may have been involved in espionage during the Cold War.

Who was the Isdal Woman?

And why did someone go to such great lengths to erase every trace of her identity?
