  • Birth Oder
    Apr 28 2025

Have you ever wondered how birth order impacts your children or the way you parent?

This week on The Expert Guide to Parenthood Podcast we discuss Birth Order with our Child Psychologist Expert Dr Deirdre Brandner.

Where you are in your family's birth order can have a fascinating effect on the person you are. The way you behave and react to others. Are you a driven or laid back person? Are you good at sharing or do you have an impatient personality? It may surprise you that this can sometimes be attributed to the place in the family you were born into; your birth order.

Understanding birth order can be useful as a parent. In this week's episode we discuss:

    - The role birth order plays in relation to your child's personality

    - Are there specific traits attributed to birth order i.e. first, second, third, fourth, last child

    - Does having a large family affect the way a child develops

    - Does being an only child affect the way a child develops

    - Should parents be mindful of a child's birth position

    - Are personality types formed by birth order - Does birth order matter or as parents should we try to be ‘equal' / treat all our children 'the same'

    - What are the positives that children gain from birth order?

    - What are the negatives that children face from birth order?

    - How can parents adapt their parenting approach with the knowledge of birth order?

Have you got stomach separation after birth?

Help is here with this week's episode of The Expert Guide to Parenthood Podcast. It is quite normal for women to feel self-conscious about their bodies, particularly how our bodies change through pregnancy and the expectation that they will ‘bounce back’ after birth.

Many women worry about ‘abdominal separation’ or Diastasis Recti to use the correct medical term. In this week's episode we welcome back our Pelvic & Women's Heath Physiotherapist Expert Annette Beauchamp to talk all about this topic.

    We discuss:

    - What Diastasis Recti is

    - How abdominal separation occurs

    - How abdominal separation is diagnosed

    - Does abdominal separation heal on its own or do you need professional support?

    - Abdominal separation exercises recommended to help close the gap

    - Exercises or activities that you should avoid which may potentially makes it worse

    - When surgery may be considered

    - The difference between Diastasis Recti and the Mama Pooch.

  • Childhood Memories - Formulation and Impact
    Apr 14 2025

How are memories formulated? How much of our little one's childhood will they remember?

This week on The Expert Guide to Parenthood Podcast we ask our Paediatric Psychologist Expert Dr Deirdre Brandner. We all feel pressure to make memories, so when our little ones look back they remember the “perfect" childhood. The old saying goes we only have 17 summers, right? We ask Deirdre: - How memories are formulated - What the earliest age we can recall a situation / memory is- Is what we can recall accurate? Or a story we tell ourselves? Or is it from a story an adult has shared or a photo we have seen- We all feel pressure to make memories, to provide the “perfect” childhood. How much influence do we actually have on a child’s memory?- How important are big events in memory, or is it more likely how they feel the ‘moments between moments’ that formulate their memories? - Are children more likely to remember bad moments and situations than positive ones?- How do we foster good memories with children through special times, moments, and traditions? - How important are memories to our overall formation of our 'Childhood" experience?
