The Man’s appearance has suffered as a result of his drinking habits. Although his clothes are ruinous, the man manages to maintain an air of dignity about him. The man heads over to Raskolnikov, and proceeds to tell his life story. He claims his drunkenness and says that he is married to a man of a noble background. She married him out of desperation after her first marriage ended in ruin. The man had a daughter of his own, named Sonya, who has become a sex worker to support her family. The man, Marmeladov, managed to get his old job back in the civil service, but he lost it in a fit of drunkenness, and he hasn’t been home in 5 days. Throughout his story, Marmeladov flits between self-reproach and justification of his state. He leaves the tavern to finally head home with Raskolnikov. The man Marmeladov’s home is a in a sorry state, his children and wife are starving. When Marmeladov enters, his wife grabs and scolds him, and the other tenants come to mock the couple. As Raskolnikov leaves, he leaves them some money he had in his pocket. The man has fallen into a state of nervous depression akin to hypochondria and so avoids people. As he leaves, the young man's thoughts turn to an extreme act that he is thinking about committing. He thinks that he isn't capable of doing it as he can't even face his landlady about his late rent. The young man is tall and handsome, with dark hair and fine dark eyes. The young man wears tattered clothes and looks like he could be homeless and the young man feels no embarrassment about his appearance. He walks, in a trace like state while reflecting on the act that he is planning to commit. He is at the moment doing a "test run," and arrives at his destination, the home of Alyona Ivanovna, a pawnbroker. As he walks up the stairs he takes in the scene, and notes that the German clerk that used to live there has moved out, making is act easier to commit. The Pawnbroker is a very old woman with a chicken leg like neck. Her home is full of ugly furniture, but it is all immaculately clean, thanks to the work of the woman's younger sister. The woman treats the young man, Raskolnikov, poorly and reminds him of the money he owes her, and offering him a terrible price for a silver watch he wants to pawn. He decides to pawn the watch nonetheless so that he can watch the woman and observe her apartment so he can commit his crime. The woman keeps all of her money and pawned items in a chest in her room that is out of view. Before leaving, Raskolnikov tells her that he will be back in a few more days with better item. Once outside, he gets filled with a sense of disgust and renounces his potential crime. He is giving a lecture on the fourth dimension. He tells them that a cube does not only exist in space, but also in time. He goes on further to claim that a man should not just be able to move about in space, the 3 other dimensions, but also in time. He notes that we are nonetheless moving forwards along the time dimension, so why not backwards. He produces a small version of a "Time Machine" and lays it on the table. He explains that one lever will send it forward, and the other backward in time. He asks one of the other guests to push the lever, and after doing so, the machine disappears, blowing out a candle with it. The guests ask why they cannot see it if it is moving into the future, and the Time Traveler explains that it is moving too quickly to be seen. The guests are blown away, and the Time Traveler takes them to his laboratory where they find a even bigger, machine. A few days after his fight with Cathy, he spent the whole night walking on the moors, and he returned with a strange almost happy persona. He told Nelly that he spent the whole night on the threshold of Hell, but that he has now seen heaven. He refuses all food and insists to be left alone, to have the Wuthering Heights to himself. He seems to have seen a figure infront of him and even conversed with it. Heathcliff's behaviour became more strange; he murmured Catherine's name and insisted that Nelly remember his burial wishes. Nelly soon found him laying in the bed in Catherin's room dead. She tells Lockwood that he has since been buried and that Cathy and Hareton shall soon be married, and then shall move to the Grange. Lockwood then leaves the Wuthering Heights and makes his way toward the church yard. He loses consciousness and falls into the river below the bridge as the rope snapped. He awakens to a strong pain running through his body. Farquhar sees a light flash and fade before it grows brighter and he rises to the surface of the river. He is afraid that he will be shot by the northern forces as soon as he is spotted in the water, and makes an attempt to free his hands and neck from the rope. Once freed he finally breaks the surface of the water and inhales deeply and painfully. He looks to the bridge and sees his executioners standing on the bridge looking for him. A sentinel fires his rifle at him but misses, Farquhar notices his grey eyes through the sight of the gun. Farquhar then hears the lieutenant instructing his men to fire, so he dives under the water and swims with the current away from the bridge. A cannonball lands two feet away from him and he swims harder for the shore. He is spun round by the current and winds up on a gravelly bank out of site and range of the gunfire. He weeps with joy and takes in the beautiful landscape around him. He heads into the forest and follows a path, walking all day to his home. Time seems to pass without him noticing, and he rouses standing at his front gate. He makes his way towards his home and sees his wife come down the verandah to meet him. When he moves to embrace her, he feels a sharp pain in his neck and sees a blinding white light. Farquhar is dead. He is hanging at Owl Creek Bridge.

On his journey he crosses paths with a farmer who remarks a cart that is apparently too late for its harvest. The man also mentions Gimmerton, which reminds Lockwood of his time at the Grange, and he decides to visit for the night and see Nelly, and also settle his debts with Heathcliff. He discovers that Nelly is no longer at the Grange and has been moved to the Wuthering Heights. He decides to head to the Heights while the sun is still up where he talks to Nelly about the past few months. She says that Cathy admitted to her that she felt guilty about mocking Hareton for his attempts to learn to read. One afternoon, Hareton was wounded while hunting and had to remain inside at the Heights. He and Cathy fought at first, but they soon agreed to get along, and Cathy even promised to help Hareton read properly. The two young people have slowly grown to love each other, and Nelly says that she cannot wait for the two of them to marry.

He brings a note from Nelly to give to Cathy. Hareton first takes the note, but when Cathy cries, he gives it back to her. He has been struggling to learn to read. Cathy says however that she has been deprived of books. Cathy mocks Hareton's attempts to learn, angering him, but she says that she doesn't want to hinder his progress. Heathcliff returns and on entering the house, mutters quietly to himself that he he can only see Catherine Earnshaw's features in his face - so much so that he can hardly bare to see him. Lockwood passes a dreary meal with Heathcliff and Hareton and then leaves. Riding back to the Grange, he remarks on how dreary the North and its people are.
