  • When God Seems Silent (Podcast 593)
    Jul 11 2025
We all have had seasons where God seems silent. They can be very challenging to navigate when we want so much to remain faithful, but it doesn't seem like we are getting any encouragement from God. I've had more days like this than I could have ever imagined over the last six months since my diagnosis, so I felt like I could speak to this and hopefully bring encouragement to your hearts. Courage by Joe Rigney: How the Gospel Creates Christian Fortitude

Quotes and scriptures mentioned in this episode:

    Thomas Merton:

“The world of men has forgotten the joys of silence, the peace of solitude which is necessary, to some extent, for the fullness of human living. When that inner voice is not heard…life is always miserable and exhausting…If man is constantly exiled from his own home, locked out of his own spiritual solitude, he ceases to be a true person.”

From an article on How Silence Helps Us connect With God:

Without silence, we struggle to know ourselves and who God created us to be. When our minds are constantly filled with outside stimuli, it becomes impossible to make space for the lessons that silence can teach us about God, about ourselves, and about his work in the world each day.

    Psalm 46:10

    Exodus 14:14

    Isaiah 40:31

    2 Chron. 20:17

    Psalm 37:7

    Isaiah 30:15

    Psalm 31:24

    Psalm 112:7,8

Wes's sermon on silence, solitude, and stillness:

    Growth and Opposition

    THE AGE-LONG MINUTE

    by Amy Carmichael

Thou art the Lord who slept upon the pillow,

Thou art the Lord who soothed the furious sea,

What matter beating wind and tossing billow

If only we are in the boat with Thee?

Hold us in quiet through the age-long minute

While Thou art silent, and the wind is shrill:

Can the boat sink while Thou, dear Lord, art in it?

Can the heart faint that waiteth on Thy will?

    St. Francis de Sales 1567-1622

Be at peace. Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather look to them with full hope as they arise. God, whose very own you are, will deliver you from out of them. He has kept you hitherto, and He will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will bury you in his arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imagination.

  • Rethinking Our Fear of Death (588)
    Mar 28 2025

Most of us have at least some fear of death. Our culture is obsessed with it but without a remedy. However, it's a completely different story for Believers!

Pastor Wes reminded me recently that Jesus has authority over sin and death and death is our servant because we belong to Jesus. One of my listeners heard me talk about this and asked if I would have Wes on the podcast to dive deeper into this topic. I'm delighted that he agreed to do that and he's here today to help us reframe our experiences according to God's word and align our thinking about death with what Christ has transformed it into.

    Scriptures mentioned:

    1 Corinthians 3:21-23

    Romans 8:38-39

    Quote read in this episode:

“ I think I find most help in trying to look on all the interruptions and hindrances to work that one has planned out for oneself as discipline, trials sent by God to help one against getting selfish over one’s work. Then one can feel that perhaps one’s true work—one’s work for God—consists in doing some trifling haphazard thing that has been thrown into one’s day. It is not a waste of time, as one is tempted to think, it is the most important part of the work of the day—the part one can best offer to God. After such a hindrance, do not rush after the planned work; trust that the time to finish it will be given sometime, and keep a quiet heart about it.” (Annie Keary, 1825-1879)

    Great is Thy Faithfulness

    Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;

There is no shadow of turning with thee. Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness, Great is thy faithfulness, Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hast provided; Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine and ten thousand beside.

Ecc. 9:7 Romans 8:35,37-39 He Giveth More Grace Listen Here

    1. He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater, He sendeth more strength as our labors increase; To added afflictions He addeth His mercy, To multiplied trials He multiplies peace.

    2. When we have exhausted our store of endurance, When our strength has failed ere the day is half done, When we reach the end of our hoarded resources Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

    3. Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision, Our God ever yearns His resources to share; Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing; The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

    4. His love has no limits, His grace has no measure, His power no boundary known unto men; For out of His infinite riches in Jesus He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.
