Hi, I'm Lexi, a board certified OB/GYN and MFM (which is a high-risk pregnancy doctor). I have created this podcast to share the stories of individuals involved in caring for pregnant people as well as the stories of those who have gone through various pregnancy complications, frustrations, and joys. My goal is to help individuals advocate for themselves and their pregnancy.

  • Survivor of an Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) Discusses The Deadly Unpredictable Disease
    Mar 25 2026

EPISODE 36: In today’s episode, I’m joined by The Birth Trauma Mama Kayleigh Summers, a licensed clinical social worker, perinatal trauma therapist, and survivor of an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE). We’re talking about one of the most serious and often misunderstood complications in pregnancy: amniotic fluid embolism (AFE). This is a rare, unpredictable, and often feared event that can occur during labor or delivery. While it is not something that can be predicted or prevented, understanding what it is and how it’s managed can help take some of the fear out of the unknown.
    Guest: Kaleigh Summers, LCSW, PMH-C

    In this episode, we cover:
    • What an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) actually is
    • Why it’s often misunderstood
    • Survival rates and how outcomes are improving
    • What happens in the body during an AFE
    • The importance of hospital preparedness and emergency protocols
    • How patients can advocate for themselves and ask the right questions
    • The emotional and psychological impact of birth trauma

Kayleigh also shares her personal experience as an AFE survivor and the work she does supporting individuals through birth trauma.

If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or supporting someone who is, this conversation is about awareness, not fear. The goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered.
