  • Investigative reporter uncovers who's orchestrating the meat culture wars | In conversation with Clare Carlile
    Dec 2 2025

Meat is becoming a major battleground in the culture wars, but how and why is this happening? Investigative reporter Clare Carlile explains how far-right populists, conspiracy theorists, government departments, lobbyists and PR firms are all contributing to the push to get us to eat more meat.

Clare Carlile is a journalist focussing on environmental and social issues. She is currently an investigative reporter for the award-winning environmental news outlet DeSmog.

Clare earned a BA in English Literature and Languages from Oxford University in 2017. She went on to work as a news and features editor - and eventually co-editor - at The Ethical Consumer Magazine, where she specialised in migrant workers’ rights.

Since 2022, she has worked as a researcher at Desmog, an international journalism platform that investigates misinformation and monitors individuals and organisations opposing climate science and environmental policy. Clare’s work focuses on agribusiness and food politics, exposing how misinformation and lobbying are used to obstruct climate action.

Her investigations have been covered by the organisations including the Financial Times, Politico, and The Guardian.

  • Has Switzerland tricked the vegan community? The truth about the new Swiss animal product labelling laws.
    Jul 31 2025

Switzerland has just introduced new animal welfare labelling laws that will force companies to write on packaging if certain farming practices have been inflicted on animals. However, while this has been met with huge amounts of praise online, including from vegans, is there more to this story that we might be missing?

In today's episode, I discuss my thoughts around the new labelling laws, highlighting what is positive about them, while also explaining why I think we should be more cautious about how we are viewing them.

    Jul 23 2025

Is the fear around plant-based alternatives really based on science, and what does it teach us about the nature of misinformation? In today's episode, I chat with Marlana Malerich about plant-based alternatives, carnivore diets, seed oils, RFK Jr., meat lobby groups and more.

Marlana Malerich is a PhD candidate at University of Sussex Business School where she is focussed on the plant-based industry in the U.K. and Europe. Prior to the PhD, she has worked over ten years at the intersection of food and sustainability, and has served as an adjunct assistant professor, focusing on animal agriculture and the future of protein.

Marlana co–founded Rooted Research Collective, a group of multidisciplinary academics whose mission is to transform research insights into actionable and data-driven strategies for a sustainable plant-based food system.
