We meet Hawthorne, still cleaving to his homeworld's utopian ideals, but with his slightly dodgy history; Mel, a charismatic mercenary who originated in a star system of rocks with dangerously eccentric orbits that have driven her society into over-crowded bunkers; Dr Banner, born into a society that keeps its distance from the rest of the Cluster, who left when his natural talent led to a request he couldn't agree to; and Cage, the ship's Engineeer, brought up in an orbital around one of several uninhabitable 'demon worlds'.
As they seek to fulfil a salvage contract Hawthorne's risk analysis proves 'unreliable' until he takes the ultimate risk and pulls it off, supported by Mel's no nonsense approach to a bunch of pirates. Meanwhile, Dr Banner's endless curiosity often puts him in difficulties until he spots the shortest route to their objective; and Cage is, often literally, the Crew's anchor ...
