    We knew that reading levels were in fluctuation, but we had no idea there was a Middle School reading crisis. According to the NWEA (The Northwest Evaluation Association which measures academic and student standards) only 30% of 8th graders are reading at grade level or above. Why? How did we get here and how do we get back on track raising great readers who love literature? We are joined by Miah Daughtery, VP of Academic Advocacy at HMH, NWEA’s parent company, to talk about their policy recommendations. We also talk to Rick Riordan and Katherine Rundell, two of the bestselling MS writers in the world about how to write for Middle Schoolers and why they think this audience needs attention. One of my favorite authors and I adore the Thursday Murder Club series. Kate, you nearly lost me with your suggestion of Tom Cruise for the movie version. Uncharacteristically wrong. Check out the Facebook groups which are casting the movie!

Kate & Charlie Gibson talk about books and interview a wide range of authors, many you’ll know, several you’ll be thrilled to learn about. So fun and informative. Recently they visited the Library of Congress and that was a fascinating listen. You know Charlie from Good Morning America (etc) and you’ll be delighted by his daughter Kate who is whip smart and funny.

Book lovers will love this, and less avid readers will be motivated to pick up a book

I can't say enough good things about this podcast - it's interesting and helpful and insightful. Kate and Charlie ask for suggestions for how to make the podcast better, and I wouldn't change a thing! I've recommended it quite a few times, but always with the warning - don't listen unless you want to greatly expand your "want to read" list! I never would have found "This is Happiness" without Kate and Charlie, and it was my favorite book (of the 60) that I read last year. I recommended the book to one of my book clubs (yes I'm in 2), and never has a book been more universally loved. Thank you for expanding MY reading horizons! Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for all that you do to make this podcast happen!
