  • Resumen

  • Five patients, one treatment room, and a broken healthcare system.

Ivan Beckley is about to become a fully-qualified doctor in the UK. But he’s not convinced that healthcare works for everyone equally.

In this series he uncovers one of the biggest and most insidious injustices in modern medicine. Fixing it could save thousands of lives every year. And yet it’s invisible, unless it directly affects you.

Statistics show that black and people of colour have worse health outcomes, and die more often than white people, across many fields of medicine and variety of illnesses.

Ivan’s search for answers takes him to the roots of modern medicine. He busts myths, debunks stereotypes and calls out misinformation that have existed for centuries and remain sadly very much alive today.

A Whistledown production for Audible Originals.

This hit home!

Loved it! It brought light to what people of color deal with in the medical care they receive!

I wish they touched more on other bias

I wish they touched more on other bias such as gender and weight... and how bias can be cumulative if multiple potential bias effeet the patient, it bugs me because some of the stuff they reference could have also have been a great opportunity to bring that up.

The Haunting Truth

This is a very real podcast about a very serious issue. I appreciate shedding a light on a very real problem in the medical field. I have personally had experience with not being treated well, listened to, and quality care. Many have been seriously hurt and traumatized by bias treatment from from some doctors (including myself).

This is a woman thing too.

It’s not just a racial problem, it’s a female problem too. Women’s pain is dismissed so much more often than men, we are made to believe it’s either not as bad as we think or we are making it up for attention. Women’s hysteria is not a 100yrs in the past, we are still treated the same, it’s just called things like “conversion disorder” or “somatic” As a chronic pain sufferer for over 20yrs I’ve had 3 out of 100 doctors actually listen to my pain. It’s extremely frustrating.

Well constructed & narrated

Very interesting and informative. Draws from personal experiences and case studies of race, ethnicity, immigrant groups, in the context of healthcare, and in both UK and US environments. Explains the motivations behind racial exclusion in medical education and medical texts. Would be helpful to the folks at JAMA.

Very interesting

This was such a good podcast! Very well researched and informative. I'd love for people who think that racism doesn't exist to listen carefully to this.

Fundamental

Overall Podcast is sufficient to anyone in the medical department or just interested about racial views and tensions. Really enjoyed the different cases but the narrator was sometimes hard to understand hint the British accent.

Annoying sound effects, but worth the listen

If you can get past the cheesy "waiting room" metaphor and the obnoxious and seemingly unrelated sound effects, this is a valuable listen about race bias in the UK and US medical systems.
