  • Matthew Aughtry: "Moving Past Watchful Dragons--Risking Creativity"
    Sep 17 2025

In this episode of The Artistic Vision, we welcome Matthew Aughtry, filmmaker, priest, and professor at Baylor University’s Truett Seminary. Together, we explore the transformative power of film and storytelling to help us see the world with fresh eyes. Drawing from C.S. Lewis’s idea of “watchful dragons,” Matthew shares how movies can break through our defenses and awaken deeper imagination. We discuss why creative risks are vital for artistic growth and why artists must resist the temptation to remain stuck in cynicism or settle for staying safe. Matthew also offers insight into how to watch a film with greater depth, showing how narrative structure shapes our appreciation of stories. This inspiring conversation will challenge you to embrace the beauty of cinema, pursue artistic courage, and recover the wonder of seeing the world anew through film, faith, and creativity.

Rev. Matthew Aughtry serves as the Acting Director of the Anglican/Episcopal House at Truett Seminary. He is a priest in The Anglican Church in North America, and a filmmaker. He serve as an adjunct professor within Baylor’s Film and Digital Media Department.
