  • The A-Trane 2026-04-17 - Randy Weston Centenary, Spring Membership Drive!
    Apr 20 2026
Celebrating the Centenary of the great Randy Weston on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! Perhaps more than any other jazz musician of his era, he connected his music to the rhythms of Africa and the legacy of Black civilizations from around the world!

Drawing from his autobiography African Rhythms (composed by him and arranged by Willard Jenkins) we'll take a sweep across his multi-faceted career from a rare RnB sideman gig with the Clovers to his collaborations with Master Gnawa musicians of Morocco and beyond with many of his masterpieces including Uhuru Africa, Blue Moses, Spirits of our Ancestors and more! (Too much for one show!)

We'll also sample 3 new releases which came out to commemorate the centenary including Randy Weston and Monty Alexander together!

Part of the special programming for Coop Radio's Spring Membership drive to encourage you to pledge your support for Vancouver Cooperative Radio by going to coopradio . org and clicking on the Donate Now button to keep great music and other community programming on the air.

    Mar 21 2026
There is a staggering number of great new jazz releases coming out all the time! So on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, we're going to start what I think might become a regular feature - A New Releases show to highlight a number of great recent releases that we haven't had a chance to visit - every week I run out of time way before I run out of music!

So we'll hear music from organist Lou Bennett (who takes in the theme), Billy Hart, Mark Turner, two from Dave Douglas, Tomeka Reid, James Brandon Lewis & the Messthetics (coming to the WISE on Apr 19 presented by Coastal Jazz), the Duke Ellington Orchestra with early versions of compositions from the Far East Suite recorded in Copenhagen in 1964, Bill Frisell (happy 75th birthday!), Thomas Morgan & Immanuel Wilkins (& WOODS) with his Murmuration, Kate Wyatt (coming to Frankie's Apr 3) with her Murmurations, the JazzLab Orchestra with Claire Devlin (now part of The Ostara Project) and Jacques Kuba Seguin (coming to the Evergreen Ctr Apr 9th presented by the Polish Canadian Jazz Society), Jessie Davis (opening the new JazzCultural in NYC tonight), Daphne Roubini (at Frankie's this weekend), Kirk Knuffke, Bernie Senensky with Pj Perry, Marquis Hill, Joel Ross, The Sistering featuring Kate McGarry, Jake Baxendale from New Zealand, Charles McPherson, Ben Wendel and his mallet ensemble, Steven Bernstein with a pair of singles - a straight retronym valve trumpet trio and a remix by Scotty Hard Nation, John Scofield & Dave Holland, Michael Formanek in a tribute to his late collaborator Susan Alcorn, Chad Taylor, and finishing with the recent Art Pepper recorded at the old Cellar with Al Neil (?) or Chris Gage (?) in the late 50s.

And there's lots more where that came from - so clear out your backlog, tune into 100.5FM or coopradio . org starting at two Pacific Time, a perfect balance of tunes to help you celebrate the equinox!

  • The A-Trane 2026-03-13 - George Coleman, Dalava, Tord Gustavsen, previews
    Mar 17 2026
Celebrating the recent birthday of one of our living jazz elders on The A-Trane Radio Program this afternoon - George Coleman is still cookin' at 91 as his recent gig at Smalls Jazz Club demonstrates! We'll take a sweep across his career from his first recording with Lee Morgan in 1957 to his most recent release (still on the charts) George Coleman With Strings.

Other birthdays include Roy Haynes (with Phineas Newborn to take in the theme) and Blue Mitchell. Preview sets for Dálava at the Zameen Art House tonight and Tord Gustavsen's trio at Christchurch on Tuesday.

Brand new single from Sharon Minemoto was released today and it gives us a glimpse of the story of her family's displacement in the Japanese-Canadian internment of the Second World War.
A psychedelic goodbye to Country Joe MacDonald (did you know that he was named after Joseph Stalin?) and the Fish with a brief side trip to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Kid Ory's Muskrat Ramble! Passing nods to upcoming gigs from James Brandon Lewis with the Messthetics in April and Omar Sosa/Seckou Keita tonight!

Eschewing obfuscations for clarity in great radio this afternoon at 100.5FM or coopradio . org (won't it be great when we can actually post links again?) this afternoon at two (no longer standard or daylight savings but) Pacific Time!

    Mar 17 2026
It's somehow ironic that Women get shortchanged again with a 23 hour International Women's Day!

Celebrating the music of great Jazz Women on this afternoon's International Women's Day edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - of course, we celebrate great music by Women all year but it's always fun to take a theme and to run with it to hear some great music. In previous years, I've mixed contemporary and historical recordings by Women but we're mainly concentrating on currently active practitioners today and recent releases wherever possible!

We'll hear music from Anais Reno who takes in the theme, Alice Coltrane, Alina Bzhezhinska, Lakecia Benjamin, Nala Sinephro with Nubya Garcia, Chelsea Carmichael, Brandee Younger with Courtney Bryant, and Muriel Grossman. A happy birthday to Ayelet Rose Gottlieb which is followed by Kris Davis, Alexa Tarantino and Kate Wyatt. Besides being World Radio Day, this is Socan Reporting Week which is a perfect reason to feature great Canadian Music on this (almost) All-Canadian edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! Keith Hartshorn-Walton took in a low-brass flavoured version of the theme.

Then Steve Holt, Alexis Baro, the Shuffle Demons, the CODE Quartet, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (with Jill Townsend) for Jazz Album of the Year Group. Then Ale Avery Nunez, Alex Samaras, the Atlantic Jazz Collective (featuring Norma Winstone), Caity Gyorgy, and Laura Anglade for Jazz Album of the Year Vocal!

Our second feature of the afternoon is this weekend's 6th Annual edition of Jazz at the Bolt, the festival organized by Cory Weeds and Tim Reinert/ Infidels Jazz at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Music from the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, Champian Fulton, Jacob Chung, Madeleine Elkins, Brandon Oscar Suarez, Julian Borkowski (featured with Neil Gray), The Bill Coon Double Quartet, Ralph A. Moore & Peter Washington (guesting with Charles Chen - see what I did there?), Paul Pigat, Tyler Henderson, Sharon Minemoto, KneeJerk, and Arvind Ramdas - a sampling of the great music happening this weekend!

And we'll fill it out with Mike Rud and Michael Blake (both at Frankie's Jazz Club next weekend), and recent releases from James Danderfer and Emad Armoush & the Avant-Garde Flamenco Trio!
