Gerald reveals the heartbreaking reason he disappeared two years ago, and our narrator, terrified of her own feelings, does what she does best: she panics and lies. She tells him she's seeing someone named David — twenty-three, spectacular abs, total fantasy. Gerald's face falls. But when he starts heading for the door, she cracks — and Gerald reveals he already knew she was lying. The chemistry is undeniable, the honesty is terrifying, and just as things finally start to feel real, someone knocks at the door.
