  • Reynolds Center turns 25. Barry Lewis discusses the arena’s top moments
    Jan 5 2024

Before the Reynolds Center opened, TU played most of its home games at the downtown Convention Center from 1977-98 after moving from the Fairgrounds where it had been since the end of World War II, primarily at the Pavilion.

When the 8,355-seat arena opened in 1998 after being built for $32 million, TU had an on-campus facility to play its home basketball games in for the first time since the 1930s.

Barry Lewis looks back at the top moments of the past 25 years of the Reynolds Center.

  • Ben Kopenski: From swimming to football and Stillwater to Tulsa
    Oct 25 2023

TU's senior defensive lineman has had quite a journey. Many in his family were swimmers and Ben was too, before quitting in high school to play football at Prosper High School in Texas.

He received very little recruiting attention and originally went to Oklahoma State to only be a student. But, he quickly realized he wasn't done with football. He walked on to the football team and later earned a scholarship. After five seasons and a promising 2022 season he decided to leave OSU rather than play a different position in a new defense in 2023.

He immediately had his eye on TU and when coaches called, it was an easy decision.

He's enjoying what will be his only season as a TU defensive lineman. So far this season, he has 25 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

He sits down with Patrick Prince to talk about his journey. The Tulsa World's TU Sports Extra Podcast is sponsored by Albert G's Barbecue.

  • Kai-Leon Herbert's journey from Florida to Tulsa
    Oct 5 2023

After five injury-riddled years at the University of Miami, Kai-Leon Herbert was telling people he was done with football.

Due to injuries, the Florida native didn’t see the field his final two years at Miami. He also endured injuries early in his Miami career. As schools began calling him to see if he was interested in transferring, Herbert told them he wasn’t interested, thinking he was done playing football.

It wasn’t until a phone call from then-TU offensive line coach Steve Farmer as well as Herbert talking to his cousin, Khalil Herbert, who is in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, did he change his mind and decide he wanted to not only continue playing football, but that he wanted to continue at Tulsa.

However, the injuries didn’t stop. He was injured yet again in his first season at TU in 2022 and played only 15 snaps in the season opener.

But, this year has been different.

Herbert has started all five games so far at left tackle for the 3-2 Hurricane, who returns to his home state this weekend to face Florida Atlantic.

Herbert joins the TU Podcast this week to talk about his journey from the Sunshine State to the Sooner State, what’s different about this year’s team and his thoughts on the city of Tulsa and more.

Also, Barry Lewis joins the podcast to offer his analysis of TU’s season through five games.

  • What did we learn about TU following impressive road win?
    Sep 26 2023

In this week's episode, Barry Lewis and Patrick Prince break down TU's 2-2 start heading into the AAC opener on Thursday at home versus Temple.

Barry said last week on the TU podcast that we'd know more about this TU team following the Northern Illinois game. So what did we learn?

We learned, among other things, that TU can win even when its quarterback  struggles. In its first crunch-time test of the season, TU earned passing grades.

Plus, which player has been the most impressive and what are still the areas of concern for Kevin Wilson's first TU team?  The Tulsa World's TU Sports Extra Podcast is sponsored by Albert G's Barbecue.
