Hepzibah, though endowed with a high and noble "heroism" by years of sorrow, finds her fierce, devoted affection utterly incapable of saving her brother, Clifford. Yet, a powerful, contrasting influence arrives in the form of Phœbe, a creature of "thoroughly wholesome" simplicity.
