  • A Deeper Dive: Elon Musk's Terafab and the Terawatt AI Reality
    Mar 26 2026

Join hosts Alex and Jordan for an actionable deep dive into Elon Musk's recent announcement of Terafab, a groundbreaking joint venture between Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX. In this episode, we unpack the sheer scale of building a terawatt-scale AI chip manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, where the goal is to compress chip design cycles from months to days.

We discuss how Musk's ambition dwarfs current global infrastructure. Current global AI compute output sits at roughly 20 gigawatts per year; Terafab targets a terawatt, meaning all existing fabs on Earth combined represent only about 2% of this goal.

While Musk's long-term vision relies on space-based solar power—which he argues delivers at least five times more energy than ground-based installations—the immediate reality is right here on the ground. The Austin fab is actively being built and will require industrial-scale grid interconnection, consuming massive amounts of power and water while generating significant heat.
