Embark with us and transmedia producer Davence Young as we explore the future of warfare and it’s hidden past in the B.E.A.R.S story world!

    Dragonesque Studios: https://davence.wixsite.com/dragonesque-studios

B.E.A.R.S the Awakening takes place in the not-too-distant future where there is an arms race to create the super soldier. The year is 2120 and the world’s superpowers are actively trying to develop bio-engineered soldiers to guarantee their safety and effectively have phycological power over their rivals. Shadow Core, a piece of the US military, is the first to cross the finish line with the help of a mysterious crystal implanted into the soldier. In a gruesome process, six elite bio-engineered soldiers emerge and the formation of B.E.A.R.S is established. Each member has a different power given to them by the crystal and their roles on the team are reflected in the powers they posses.

The first installment of the B.E.A.R.S. story world is a novel “The First Hygaurdian” which will be published soon. This is the story of Ashe, a “crypto-archologist” who is instrumental in discovering the crystal that created the B.E.A.R.S. It is through his dreams that he discovers his connection to an ancient people, the Atlanteans.

We spoke about the world of B.E.A.R.S, crypto- archology, and the future iterations of this fascinating world. We suggested that Davence lean into his illustration talents in creating a weekly comic-strip-esc story surrounding crypto-archology to help build an audience for the world and his future larger projects.

  • SWE #22 A Story World in 8 Days - Winter 2026
    Feb 17 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Kicking off Season 3 of the Story World Explorers Podcast is our inaugural transmedia competition "A Story World in 8 Days"!

We had the absolute pleasure of having 8 fantastic artists from around the world participate in a intense, 8 day world building competition. The only things they knew was that they had 8 days to build a fully functioning world and that they'd have to present it to a panel of judges in 15 minutes. If that sounds impossible, you underestimate the talent of these creatives!

This episode is a compilation of the competition. What took 8 days and many recordings has been synthesized down to the necessities, using ourselves as narrative deceives to give context to how the competition unfolded. You'll find out what theme was chosen, what teams were assigned, what worlds were created, and finally which team won the golden laurel of the first of many "A Story World in 8 Days".

Thank you to both Chris Masson for suggesting, developing, and helping produce the entire competition, and to our amazing guest judge Houston Howard whose transmedia expertise and insight gave our participants invaluable feedback.

Embark with us and transmedia producer Louie Olivas as we explore the future of mankind on the galactiport, Jancroon!

    Jancroon: https://jancroon.com/

Jancroon takes place over a thousand years in the future deep in space on a galactiport named Jancroon. Humankind has long since left Earth and now exist in these self-contained galactiports. Jancroon is one of these havens but is also the first of its kind. Spanning 800 miles in diameter and featuring star-scrapers, Jancroon is home not to just mankind, but an entirely different species of intelligent life, the Croon. Humans and Croon co-habitat this galactiport but are sequestered to either side with a large dome in between them. There is tension mounting, mistrust between the species, and a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled.

We spoke about galactiports, human v. croon, and all about the inter-workings of the story world. After setting the scene we explored new content Louie is already working on and suggested some interesting concepts to grow his audience as he waits for larger investments from VCs.

The Croon are brooding and the prophecy is waiting to come to fruition! Come travel to Jancroon with us!

  • SWE #20 Show Sold Separately with Jonathan Gray
    Aug 21 2025

Embark with us and fandom studies expert Jonathan Gray as we explore the importance of paratexts in transmedia storytelling!

Jonathan is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of Show Sold Separately. His work examines how media entertainment and its audiences interact and examines how and where value and meaning are created. A principal part of this research is found exploring paratexts; the secondary and tertiary texts produced by both the fandom and entertainment entity to support, hype, and contextualize the larger pieces of content. Think the movie poster for a feature film, the fanfiction that focuses on a side character, and the action figure for a superhero.

Paratexts are incredibly important to the transmedia ecosystem, as it allows your audience to form initial and new opinions of the content your produce. They refract messages to make new meanings and cause regenerative conversations between you and your audience. Paratexts are often seen as marketing or fan obsessions, but in reality they have immense power create a living story world.

We spoke about what paratexts are and how to identify them and then examples of the power of paratext observing Superman and The Simpsons. We also explored how the independent artist can use paratexts in their own work to reframe messages and drive interest into their larger projects.

If there is one episode you should listen to in this Story World Explorers season, make it this one!
