I was a morbidly obese heart surgeon.

All through high school, college, med school and surgical training, I followed the U.S. dietary guidelines for both diet and exercise. Yet nothing I did kept the weight off.

I just kept getting fatter and fatter.

Each day in surgery, I would split open the chests of people just like me. I knew I was heading for the operating table myself if I didn't find solutions that worked.

In 2016, I finally found a way to lose 100 pounds and keep it off.

Now - in addition to doing heart surgery - I work to help people just like me get healthy, lose the weight and keep it off.

I'm Dr. Philip Ovadia, the rebel M.D. and cardiac surgeon who is working to keep people off my operating table.

  • The Fat Cell Gatekeeper: How One Unknown Hormone Controls Whether You Can Actually Lose Weight - Dr. Jay Wrigley
    Dec 2 2025

Your gut contains more bacterial cells than human cells in your entire body. This living ecosystem either works for you or against you, and most people are unknowingly destroying it with every meal. Dr. Jay Wrigley, hormone specialist, breaks down the intricate web connecting gut microbiome health, hormonal responses, and metabolic dysfunction in ways that finally make sense.

This conversation cuts through the symptom-chasing approach of conventional medicine to examine root causes. Why does adding iodine sometimes wreck thyroid function instead of helping it? What does sea salt actually contain, and why might vacation at the beach genuinely improve thyroid symptoms? How does the body's stress response literally prevent fat cells from releasing their contents, no matter how perfectly you eat?

Dr. Wrigley explains hormone sensitive lipase, the enzyme-hormone that acts as gatekeeper for fat burning, and why most people have never heard of it despite its central role in weight management. He traces the cascade from dietary choices through insulin and cortisol to inflammation and arterial damage, showing how the body's hormonal response to what you eat matters more than the food itself.

The discussion covers thyroid conversion problems that standard TSH testing misses entirely, the relationship between progesterone, estrogen and cellular thyroid function, and why the carnivore diet might indicate deeper gut issues rather than being a long-term solution. Learn which simple dietary modifications address iodine status without expensive testing, and how stress management connects directly to your body's willingness to release stored fat.

This is functional medicine thinking applied to everyday metabolic problems, explained through the lens of a practitioner who treats hormones as the body's first responders to everything you do, eat, think, and experience.

    BIG IDEA

Your health is much more related to the hormonal response by the choice that you just made than what you ate at all.

  • Why Modern Medicine Keeps You Sick: A Doctor's Wake-Up Call About Healthcare and Money - Dr. Ahmad Ammous
    Nov 25 2025

Dr. Ahmad Ammous completed medical school expecting to heal people. Instead, he found a system designed to keep patients dependent on expensive drugs and procedures. In this conversation with Dr. Philip Ovadia, he traces the roots of our broken healthcare system back to 1910's Flexner Report and the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913—showing how centralized financial power shaped modern medicine into a profit-driven enterprise rather than a healing practice.

A first-year medical student when he switched to a meat-focused diet, Ammous experienced immediate relief from depression and anxiety that standard care never addressed. This personal transformation led him to question everything: why do patients with rheumatoid arthritis see only 20-30% improvement after 15 years of "standard treatment"? Why are hospitals increasingly chaotic disaster zones? Why can't physicians practice independently anymore?

The answers lie in understanding how artificial scarcity in medical education, massive student debt, and inflationary monetary policy have consolidated healthcare into massive institutions dependent on government funding and pharmaceutical company influence. Ammous argues that physicians must become entrepreneurs again, building decentralized practices outside the failing system—and that Bitcoin represents the financial foundation needed to break free from centralized control.

He also introduces quantum biology and the role of melanin in cellular energy production, explaining why modern indoor living under artificial light may be contributing to chronic disease. The path forward combines ancestral healing wisdom with modern scientific understanding, practiced in ways that actually serve patients rather than institutional profits.

This conversation offers both critique and hope—a roadmap for physicians ready to exit a collapsing system and patients seeking genuine healing rather than symptom management.

    BIG IDEA

"I understood how the medical system doesn't really benefit from getting people healthy—it benefits from keeping them sick and dependent on the system, selling them expensive drugs and surgeries."

  • #220: Research Scientist Exposes the Shocking Origins of Low-Fat Diet Guidelines - Zoe Harcombe PhD
    Oct 21 2025

Zoe Harcombe didn't set out to become a controversial figure in nutrition science. With a background working inside both Mars candy company and pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, she witnessed firsthand how corporate interests shape public health messages. But when she decided to pursue her PhD, what she discovered about the origins of our dietary guidelines shocked even her.

In this revealing conversation with Dr. Philip Ovadia, Harcombe breaks down her groundbreaking research showing that America's low-fat dietary guidelines - the foundation for nutritional advice affecting hundreds of millions of people - were based on just six randomized controlled trials involving fewer than 2,500 exclusively sick men. No women. No healthy people. Yet these became the blueprint for what we're told to eat.

Harcombe traces how Senator George McGovern's 1977 committee, influenced by his recent experience at a Pritikin bootcamp, essentially ignored the available scientific evidence and pushed through recommendations that had no solid research foundation. The ripple effects created our modern processed food epidemic and contributed to skyrocketing rates of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction.

But this isn't just about diet. Harcombe also shares her five-year legal battle against a major UK newspaper that attempted to silence her criticisms of statin research through personal attacks rather than scientific debate. Her victory in court has implications for free speech in scientific discourse and establishes important precedents for researchers challenging medical orthodoxy.

From her unique insider perspective having worked at the highest levels of both big food and big pharma, Harcombe offers an unflinching look at how corporate interests have hijacked public health policy. She explains why the Mediterranean diet isn't what Harvard researchers claim it is, why an apple affects your body similarly to a candy bar, and why real change has to come from individuals taking control of their own health rather than waiting for institutions to reform themselves.

This conversation cuts through decades of nutritional mythology to reveal the uncomfortable tr

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as Dr. Ovadia tackles the plus and minus of the major diets available to help people make their best decision. The opening of the book was very powerful. He lays out how to take control of your health to live a better life. Highly recommend this for the family.

Great introduction into becoming healthy

I looked forward to listening those podcasts, cause of the content. Content great. Book is clear. But these podcasts, oh my.. Next to proper facts about sugar, obesity and metabolic health, they also didn't teach eloquence in med school. An average of 4 'you knows' (not exaggerating) per sentence made me ditching the podcasts after one and a half episode , and grabbing the book.

Content great, Performance horrible 'youknow'

not much info here. eat whole foods. don't eat processed food. exercise. sleep. don't stress. all provides at excruciatingly slow pace. if you are a total newbie its fine. probably get all this in less time glancing at a website
