  • Loula Yorke - Songs of Our Lives #39
    Jun 18 2024

On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it’s Loula Yorke! Ever since our paths crossed a couple years ago, I’ve become a huge admirer of all the various components in Loula’s creative practice. Her new mixtape series is (along with her recent album, “Volta”) one of my favorite things happening in 2024. Plus, I’m not sure I’ve laughed more during an episode than this one! So, after talking through both of those things, we get into jamming to ABBA, Mira Calix and Oliver Coates destroying us, Candi Staton’s unheralded greatness, the diverging paths and intersections of dance music and punk, Kreayshawn’s drunk vibes, the honey in Erykah Badu’s voice, The Roches unhinged lyrics, how utterly bad ass Special Interest are, Liquid Crystal being better than Mozart, and so much more!

  • Cadence Weapon - Songs of Our Lives #38
    Jun 11 2024

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Cadence Weapon on on the show. After talking about his fantastic new record, “ROLLERCOASTER,” and the ways we unearth new music, the party really starts. We go into busting a move with James Brown, Merle’s other side, annoying people with Ian Dury, The Flamingos going to another dimension, when Frank Ocean flipped the script, Steely Dan’s best lyrics, why you shouldn’t take on Kendrick Lamar, a version of Nirvana better than Nirvana, where it all comes together with Nick Cave, and more!

  • Lawrence English - Songs of Our Lives #37
    Jun 4 2024

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Lawrence English on the show. I’ve known Lawrence for almost two decades now, and I am in constant awe of his music, his drive, and the way he builds community through his work. A new collaboration with Akira Kosemura has my attention right now, but I know there’s always something else lurking around the next corner. Our conversation is winding, vaguely on topic (and in the usual format), but we hit some high points with his love of anime, the power of Public Enemy to open windows, Merzbow’s uplifting spirit, the surprise of Ace Frehley’s solo album, Sakamoto bringing out the tears, and so much more!

Listen to all of Lawrence’s picks HERE (note that we didn’t get to all these picks in the episode!)

  • M. Sage - Songs of Our Lives #36
    May 28 2024

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Matthew Sage on the show. His band, Fuubutsushi has a new album out in June called “Meridians” and it is dosed with magic. After chatting about that for a bit and his decision to take cached.media off Bandcamp, we get into it. Imagining existing in world before Erik Satie, learning to love Paul McCartney, Black Dice’s unfathomable music, the undeniable genius of Bill Evans, being crushed by Joanna Newsom, Daft Punk turning on the lights, having your family turn on you because of Bobby McFerrin, and so much more!

  • Shane Parish - Songs of Our Lives #35
    May 21 2024

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Shane Parish on the show. When it comes to modern guitar gods, Shane is right up there for me. I am constantly amazed by not just what he can play, but HOW he plays - there is so much subtlety, emotional depth, and joy in it that it becomes infectious. His new album, “Repetoire,” is an absolute triumph. After we get into that and his love of transcribing music for solo guitar, we go all out with one of Dylan’s most brutal songs, loving life with Nina Simone, Fugazi doing Fugazi things, Coltrane going immortal, Nick Drake and courtship, and finally - FINALLY - someone picks THE answer for which cover song is better than the original. Oh, and there’s loads more, too!

  • Myriam Gendron - Songs of Our Lives #34
    May 14 2024

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Myriam Gendron on the show. Suffice to say, Myriam is one of my favorite musicians and songwriters on the planet, and her newest album, Mayday, only cements that further. Beyond all the great music we talked about, Myriam brought up an interesting point around thinking about songs vs. performances that I am still pondering weeks later. But, with that, we talked about getting destroyed by Nico, the most beautiful melody in history, Guns N Roses lack of redeeming qualities, Will Oldham’s beautiful restlessness, contentious Leonard Cohen gems, Rosali on fire, lullabies with Sandy Denny, and so much more!

  • Jharis Yokley - Songs of Our Lives #33
    May 7 2024

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Jharis Yokley on the show. Jharis’s debut album, "Sometimes, Late At Night,” has been in constant rotation for a while. I knew he was an incredible drummer, but had no idea just how good a songwriter he is, too. After talking a bit about the record, we go long with how Disney songs ingrain in our memories, the hardest anime theme around, Bee Gees making us feel good, Herbie Hancock raising his own level, lots of love for ABBA, Kanye’s best lyrics, Laura Mvula’s voice from another dimension, and more!

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Lea Bertucci on the show. We jump right in - no time for a proper intro! From Lea’s selection criteria for this show, her love of Mexico City, The Tonebook Volume 2, we chat about where you go when it all starts with Sade, Dee Lite’s joyfulness, Garbage being garbage, a scandalous take on Neil Young, the power of Jolene, Julee Cruise oozing romance, the depth of Scott Walker’s lyrics, and so much more!
