Slave patrols were organized groups in the American South, starting in the 1700s, tasked with controlling enslaved people by preventing rebellions, returning runaways, and enforcing strict slave codes through surveillance, intimidation, and violence, effectively acting as an early, brutal form of policing that later evolved into the roots of modern police forces after the Civil War.
