Short Story 587 - The Lost Key (Upper Beginner)

Emma lived alone in a small, cosy house near the edge of the woods. She always wore her house key on a blue string around her neck—it was her most important possession. One morning, as she reached for the key to unlock her front door, her fingers touched only empty space. The key was gone!

Her heart beat faster. She checked her nightstand, under her pillow, and even shook out her blankets. Nothing. She searched the bathroom, the kitchen counter, and all her coat pockets. Still no key.

Emma took a deep breath and tried to remember the last time she had seen it. Yesterday evening, she had sat outside in the garden, drinking tea. Maybe it had fallen there. She hurried outside and scanned the grass, moving flowerpots and checking under her chair. No luck.

Then, she remembered—after her tea, she had taken a short walk into the woods to sit under her favourite oak tree. Perhaps the key had slipped off there!

Emma walked quickly along the narrow path, leaves crunching under her feet. The woods were quiet except for the chirping of birds. When she reached the oak tree, she knelt and searched the ground. There, half-buried in the dirt, was a glint of metal—her key!

Just as she picked it up, a movement caught her eye. A small brown rabbit hopped out from behind a bush, its nose twitching. It stopped and stared at her.

Emma smiled. "Hello there! Did you see my key?" she asked softly. The rabbit flicked its ears and then darted away into the undergrowth.

Relieved, Emma tied the key securely around her neck, making sure the knot was tight this time. As she walked home, she thought about how strange it was that a little rabbit might have been the only one to know where her key was.

When she got back, she unlocked her door and sighed happily. She made herself a fresh cup of tea and sat by the window, watching the woods. Maybe tomorrow she would bring a carrot for the rabbit—just to say thank you.
