Scrum Master & Product Owner - One Person Two Roles

Scrum Master and Product Owner are two distinct roles within agile framework that ensure planning and delivery of work in a methodical and seamless fashion. Can one person be both product owner and scrum master? I share my perspective and would love to hear from you.
