Today’s guest is Kristen Herring, PhD, scientific consultant supporting ARPA-H, a new government agency funding high-risk, high-reward research programs (disclosure, I also support ARPA-H in my day job).
Kristen has a PhD in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University, and she knew right away that a life in academia wasn’t for her. So, when she learned about the Presidential Management Fellowship, a program that gives newly-minted PhDs the opportunity to learn about scientific careers in the government, she applied and became the first Vanderbilt student to receive the honor! Through the program, Kristen found her first job at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and has been using her talents to support the government ever since. This is a great episode for those who, like me, had the impression that government science jobs only belonged to physicists, engineers, and computer scientists! Happy listening!
