CHRISTMAS DAY – TELESCOPE AND MICROSCOPE

The Gospel writers each give a word-painting of what Christmas and Incarnation means. John puts us in awe of God and Word beyond all time and space; Luke’s focus is on the equally shocking earthly everyday-ness of God among us.

    SINGING A NEW SONG: CHRISTMAS

Following the beautiful tradition of music as a framework, we can see the birth of Jesus as a way that God becomes incarnate into our ordinary lives.

    REPENTANCE AS RENEWAL

Jesus’ words about the destruction of the world are scary-but don’t we long for change and for the Peaceable Kingdom foretold in Isaiah?

    PIECES ARE ENOUGH

Just as saints are highly imperfect, the places we gather need not be fancy.

    HYPOCRISY, HUMILITY, HOLINESS

Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector challenges us to view our own places of hypocrisy and to bend our prayers as not a performance, but to respond to the mercy already leaning toward us. Prayer, especially our tradition of common prayer, is how we live in humility, in relationship, and in grace: not getting life “right,” but letting ourselves be received by our loving, liberating, life-giving God.
