Cal grew up in Madison, WI and has been married to his wife for 32.5 years, with whom he has 5 children.

Cal and the work that he does has been instrumental in the fight against suicide in the Construction Industry. His first suicide prevention project in the workplace was mid-1990s with suicide prevention and behavioral health interventions in municipal jails.

Cal was named Top 25 Newsmaker for 2016 in the global construction industry by Engineering News-Record magazine https://www.enr.com/top-25-newsmakers-2016

Cal helped catalyze the formation of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention in 2016.
