  • Sharing In The Groove: The Untold Story of the 90's Jam Band Explosion Book Review
    Jul 22 2025

When you think of rock ‘n’ roll hotspots, Princeton, New Jersey probably doesn’t make the list. But according to Sharing in the Groove, maybe it should.
This episode dives into the surprising and sprawling history of the jam band movement through the lens of this compelling oral history.

What you'll hear in this episode:

    • How the jam band scene exploded in the late ‘80s and ‘90s—from Princeton to Athens (Widespread Panic), Vermont (Phish), and Charlottesville (Dave Matthews Band).
    • Why the culture of taping live shows was both a gift and a headache for bands and labels alike.
    • How record companies struggled to understand, and market bands that didn’t move units but packed venues.
    • What happened when Jerry Garcia died and how it shifted the jam band ecosystem almost overnight.
    • Candid memories and quotes from Trey Anastasio, John Popper, Derek Trucks, Steve Lillywhite, Dave Matthews, Karl Denson, John Medeski, and more.

  • The Whyte Python World Tour: Book Review
    Jul 15 2025

The book is equal parts parody and love letter to the excess’s of 1980s music culture. I've never reviewed a book like this on the podcast, but now that I have, I am glad I did!

I listened to the Little Steven episode about his book Unrequited Infatuations. I loved the "set" format of the show where the host breaks down the show into sections or sets. The first being the overall review and then following up with his recommendations for both big fans of the artist and more casual fans about whether the book or documentary would be for them. I would fall into the casual fan category for Little Steven and found the review of
his book really interesting without giving away too much . I definitely want to read the book after listening to the podcast. And I absolutely will be listening to other episodes of Rock Talk Studio.

Love this!
