  • Andrew Gaze: Mr Basketball

    Andrew Gaze is the preeminent figure in Australian basketball for the last half-century.

    A key pillar in the Gaze family basketball dynasty, it isn't too far from the truth to say Andrew was born on a basketball court.

    Named NBL Rookie of the Year at 18 and an Olympian at 19, Gaze's career is marked by numerous accolades, including being an NBA champion in 1999, a two-time NBL champion (1993, 1997), a seven-time NBL MVP (1991, 1992, 1994–1998), and a fourteen-time NBL scoring champion (1986, 1988, 1989, 1991–2001).

    He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004 and elevated to legend status in 2022, joined the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2005, and was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2013.

    Giaan Rooney is one of the most popular and loved sports people in Australia.

    As a swimmer, she was fast, the 2001 World Champion in the 200m freestyle.

    In Athens 2004, along with teammates Leisel Jones, Petria Thomas and Jodie Henry, Giaan won Olympic gold in the 100m medley relay, following on from two silver medals from the Sydney Games four years earlier.

    Champion James Tomkins OAM is a triple Olympic gold medallist, two of those as part of the much loved Oarsome Foursome.

    Their win in the Men’s Four at the Barcelona Olympics of 1992, made rowing cool and their defence in 1996 cemented their legacy as legends of Australian sport.

    For Tomkins, there was more glory ahead, bronze in the Men’s Pair, against insurmountable odds in Sydney 2000. And four years later, a third Olympic gold in combination with long-time offsider Drew Ginn in the Pair.

    He helped inspire a generation of rowers, many of whom will be seeking to emulate his dominance in the Regatta at the Paris games.

    In the first form slump of his career, Perkins was last to be selected on the team when he laboured home in second behind Daniel Kowalski to qualify for the 1500m.

    In Atlanta, the doom and gloom failed to lift but he made the final by 0.23 seconds.

    The boy has walked through a glass door, his body shredded, he can’t walk and needs 85 stitches to sew him back together.

    Father and son meet a swim coach called John Carew.

    None of them knew it, but it was an encounter that changed the course of Australian sports history.

    The boy’s name, Kieren Perkins.
