    Episode 61: Break Time

After a remarkable 13-month run of weekly episodes, the certified reprobate stew chefs are announcing a well-deserved "stewcation." In this reflective farewell episode, Jim and Justin look back on their journey from Episode 1's "A Father's Nightmare" to their current milestone of 61 consecutive episodes.

The duo celebrates their incredible roster of 19 guests who've graced the stew kitchen, from the great Dennis Kay to Uncle Garth, including memorable appearances by Sarge (and the legendary Cheetos incident), the free-spirited Ela with her jet-black El Camino, and Cameron's award-winning video work. They dive into favorite episodes, least favorites, and standout moments - including the great oatmeal raisin vs. chocolate chip cookie debate that divided the nation.

With heavy pours of vodka flowing freely, the conversation touches on everything from their home teaching companion origins to episodes they can't remember recording (and one they had to delete entirely). Justin commits to keeping the Facebook page alive during their summer break with throwback content, while both hosts promise to return stronger than ever in September.

A toast-heavy episode filled with mutual admiration, behind-the-scenes stories, and gratitude for the Stew Nation that grew far beyond what two guys just talking ever imagined possible.

Hosts: Jim Burns & Justin Shelley
    Runtime: Approximately 50 minutes
Status: Final episode before summer hiatus: June 2021 - August 202X (I don't reckon we ever specified which August)

BREAKING NEWS! The chefs will return in August or September 2025 with fresh recipes and renewed energy.

    May 1 2020

Justin tithed on birthday money. Jim had iced tea and a dad who questioned God’s batting average. Together? They grew up Mormon in very different ways, and somehow lived to tell about it. From holy underwear to fig-leaf cosplay and the eternal shame of Coca-Cola, the stew chefs spill their origin stories in part one of Mormon Recovery. It’s honest. It’s uncomfortable. It’s funny as hell. Sacred? Maybe. Secret? Not anymore.

    Episode 1: A Father's Nightmare

In the inaugural episode of Reprobate Stew, hosts Justin and Jim dive deep into one of life's most devastating experiences. Justin shares the harrowing story of February 1st - the day that changed everything when he received a call about his 20-year-old son Kyle's critical motorcycle accident in St. George, Utah.

From a frantic rush to catch the last flight out of Dallas to making impossible medical decisions in a hospital room, Justin walks us through those first brutal hours and the agonizing choice to remove life support. The conversation explores the raw reality of loss, including the challenge of planning two funeral services and delivering eulogies as a grieving father.

Beyond the tragedy itself, Justin and Jim examine how grief affects families, the physical toll of loss, and the surprising ways communities rally around those in crisis. They discuss religion, spirituality, and finding meaning in random tragedy, while touching on the difference between families that are torn apart by loss versus those that find ways to stay together.

This deeply personal episode sets an unexpectedly serious tone for what promises to be a wide-ranging podcast about life, loss, and everything in between.

Content warning: This episode deals with death, grief, and medical trauma.
