The research says the key to a happy life is happy relationships. But how exactly do you make your relationships better? That’s what this show is all about.

I’m Dr. Abby Medcalf, psychologist, best-selling author, TEDx speaker, and (according to my kids) the bossy Jewish mom you didn’t know you needed. With decades of experience and millions of listeners in over 180 countries, I give you the no-fluff, research-backed strategies to make all your relationships better: with your partner, your family, your friends, and (most importantly) yourself.

Every week on the Relationships Made Easy podcast, I mix straight talk, humor, and science to help you communicate effectively, set healthy boundaries, and stop second-guessing yourself. Because great relationships aren’t built in a day. Great relationships are built daily.

  • 359. Soothing Yourself First: Why Relying on Others Isn’t the Answer
    Nov 18 2025

You always wait. You wait for the phone call from your partner, the text from a friend, the counselor’s time, maybe even your parent’s voice to calm you. But what if I told you that waiting is costing you your power? That you are the single most reliable person you’ll ever have to calm you down, and until you claim that, you’ll keep showing up in your relationships needy, reactive, or out of sorts.

Today we’re going to uncover why you habitually reach for someone else first, how that pattern affects the one relationship you can’t escape (the one with you), and most importantly, I’ll give you five research-backed self-soothing tools you can start using right now, so you don’t have to wait for rescue.

The holidays can bring out the best in us and the absolute worst. One minute you’re sipping cocoa, the next you’re fantasizing about running away from the dinner table and hiding in your car. You love your family, but let’s be honest: they can drive you crazy. That’s why in this episode I’m giving you tools you can actually use in real time. • 357. Talk So They Lean In: The 5 Moves for Difficult Conversations
    Nov 3 2025

Hard conversations don’t usually blow up because of the issue itself. They blow up because of the moves we make in the moment. You’ve been there: you bring up money, or intimacy, or family dynamics, and suddenly you’re in the middle of a fight you didn’t want, wondering how it went sideways so fast. The good news? You don’t need more guts or more clever comebacks. You need a better playbook. Today I’ll teach you the five moves that keep defensiveness low and collaboration high. You’ll learn the exact questions to ask, what to do when your partner shuts down, and how to leave the conversation feeling connected instead of defeated.

I'm so grateful that I found Dr. Abby's podcast. I've had so many "aha!" moments listening to this show and I've seen a huge change in my relationships (all of them -- family, partner, coworkers) and I've generally felt better and more content. She shares so many useful tips that are simple, but really make a huge difference if you try them. I can't recommend this pdocast enough. Even if you're not in a relationship, which I wasn't for a long time, she really teaches you how to find peace and just be happy with yourself. Thank you, Dr. Abby. You're doing good things in the world!

I found this podcast because I was looking to build better relationships, I went through some significant losses because of mistakes I made and this podcast has really helped me transform my relationships, understand what a healthy relationship looks like and become a better person. I have never written a review for another podcast so hopefully that lets you know just how much of an impact this podcast has had.

Practical, and Life-Changing Relationship Advice - she gave me the tools to be a better person.

I tend to ramble when I write reviews about helpful podcasts that hit the mark on so many levels, so I'll do my best to be concise here with my top 3 reasons I LOVE THIS PODCAST:

1. Abby breaks her topics down into actionable, PRACTICAL steps - WITHOUT RAMBLING or getting off topic!

2. Very thorough in that she approaches each topic from various different angles
Example: How __(gaslighting)___ affects you personally, signs to look for when you're on the receiving end, long term effects, what you can do to combat _________, ETC.

3. She discusses the NITTY-GRITTY (juicy) aspects of popular mental health/self-improvement topics. 4 years + worth of content already there.
(there's so many good ones in her episode list, hard to choose every time I go to listen! They are all longer than 30 minutes, too =D)

I am your catalogue over-thinker and over analyzer who has put in lots of time searching for, and listening to various types of productivity, self-help, empath/mental health podcasts, so the above mentioned list is just 3 of MANY reasons why I love the podcast BEST out of all of them. BUT perhaps the MOST important aspect of the podcast is, to me, the likeability of the podcast host themselves...

Abby is extremely intelligent (PhD), yet speaks as if she's someone you've known for decades. Her background story is inspiring and relatable. I love her CHARISMA and down-to-earth practicality.

BUT the thing that I love the MOST about this is: she doesn't ramble. She doesn't laugh for 45 seconds leaving you frustrated as you close out the podcast app, waiting for her to get to the good stuff. She doesn't come off as "high n mighty", she doesn't turn you off after 10 minutes of introduction and announcements, and she DOESNT take up large amounts of time discussing trivial "life update" chats about her personal life, as MANY OTHER PODCAST HOSTS do.
****Don't get me wrong! Its not that any given podcast hosts' personal life isn't interesting or important. But lets face it... we DON'T always have the TIME, the ATTENTION SPAN, OR the EMOTIONAL BANDWIDTH that's required to get through these rambling periods that I hear on other podcasts do episode after episode!!!!****

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST if you are struggling with mental health, relationship issues, or looking for information on being an Empath. TRUST!

**Ramble end**

HELPFULLY INFORMATIVE (& ALL-AROUND AMAZING!!!)
