  • Saving Throes # 152 - DM Advice, Volume 2
    Apr 2 2026

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

This week I am tackling a fresh new round of DM advice questions. I scoured the internet and found a number of requests for advice. This time it is themed around first time DMs taking up the DM mantle whether through curiosity or necessity, and looking for advice to be successful. I noted many questions are around how to tell a great story, and I of course have lots of opinions on the very nature of that question! Tune in to hear my answers to these fledgling DM questions as well as a sensitive question about gamer hygiene habits!

  • Pining for Pixels # 152 - Report Card: Xbox Partner Preview, March 26, 2026
    Mar 31 2026

Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games!

Xbox suddenly announced that they will be doing a games showcase presentation, this time a partner preview of upcoming 3rd party titles coming to Xbox platforms. The announcement however, seems to have gone fairly unnoticed as many people didn't even realize this happened until it was already done. This presentation certainly had a couple of interesting announcements and some surprises as well. As expected, there was a big focus on titles that are coming to Game Pass day one, are Xbox Play Anywhere titles, or better yet, are a combination of both! The Xbox Play Anywhere designation certainly has a draw for me since I have the ROG Xbox Ally X! Tune in to hear what I thought was done well during this presentation, and what I felt were the opportunities to improve upon for future.

  • Saving Throes # 151 - Around the Campfire: Tales From a D&D Camp Counsellor
    Mar 26 2026

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

I wanted to share a new story from my D&D experience - this time a very recent experience! Last week I took on the role of a D&D Camp Counsellor for a group of 6 kids between ages 10 - 14 over March break. It was a gruelling experience but a lot of fun too. I have a lot of public play experience as well as running tables of kids, but this was a 5-day campaign arc that I ran for the same group of kids and I came back with a lot of lessons learned and some great gaming memories! I think the kids all left at the end of the week with great gaming memories too and fantastical tales to tell their friends when they return school. Tune to hear how I prepared for this and how the experience actually played out.

  • Pining for Pixels # 151 - Impressions: Crimson Desert
    Mar 24 2026

Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games!

I had initially planned to do a different episode this week, but then I started playing Crimson Desert, and shortly thereafter I knew I had to talk about this game. It is the game of the moment right now, and lots of people have very strong opinions on it, both for good and bad. It was a highly anticipated game, and has turned into a very divisive one, as well with a heap of its own controversy. I want to cut through all the controversy and get to the core of my thoughts on this game. It was not really on my radar at all prior to its release, but it has ended up making a huge splash with me. Tune in to hear my impressions with this game so far and why I think that gaming review sites have been all over the place, and why it is so hard to review a game like this at release.

  • Saving Throes # 150 - Ritual of Scrying: The Business of D&D
    Mar 19 2026

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

On this week's episode, I am doing a Ritual of Scrying segment after discovering a very interesting article online that was all about the business of D&D and the TTRPG industry in general. It outlined 5 different tiers of success in the industry and really painted how disparate the big publishers are in terms of their business and financial success. It isn't exactly shocking news to anyone, but it just helps to better contextualize where this industry is today, especially when compared to how it started in Gary Gygax's basement with a small hand made box set that contained 3 little pamphlet style booklets. Tune in to hear about how successful your favourite publisher really is.

  • Pining for Pixels # 150 - Versus Mode: Exclusives Vs. No Exclusives
    Mar 17 2026

Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games!

Versus Mode returns with a timely entry, comparing the idea of platform exclusivity vs. the idea of sharing all your IP across as many platforms as you can. Clearly we have seen this in action with Xbox this generation as they make bank on some of their previously exclusive titles like Forza Horizon 5 on new platforms like the PlayStation 5. It appears to be working well for MicroSoft in terms of getting money, but it is coming a the cost of moving Xbox consoles. Meanwhile PlayStation has experimented with moving around some of their beloved IP, but with different results causing them to take a step back from it recently. Nintendo just stays in the same walled garden they always have. In this new world order, the idea of remaining exclusive might seem obvious, but I think it now raises some legitimate concerns and questions for most companies. Tune in to hear me weigh out the pros and cons of platform exclusivity, and determine which I feel is the best approach when all is said and done.

  • Saving Throes # 149 - First Forays: Nimble
    Mar 12 2026

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

You may have heard a lot about a supposed D&D 5e "clone" type game, that fixes 5e's pacing issues and drastically speeds up gameplay, hence it's name: Nimble. It seems to be on the minds and lips of many in the D&D and TTRPG community, both new generation fans brought in by 5e and old school fans of prior editions alike. I had never tried this game, but it generated a lot of buzz over the last year that I knew I wanted to check it out. I'm glad I did because this game is far more than a simple "faster 5e", It does indeed originate from a 5e starting point, but the game itself takes far bigger and bolder steps than I was anticipating, and I have to say, I am impressed. Tune in to hear what parts of this game really surprised me and got me more intrigued.
