We finished BOMBO in episode 8 of “Read Along Radio”. At the end of that episode, we asked for feedback on BOMBO and “Read Along Radio”. Here are some of the comments we got about BOMBO.

We had several people ask, “What happens next?” What happens next is the Read Along Radio podcast of POPPY.

Poppy is the sad, but cute, little Pekingese we heard about at the end of BOMBO. She had been doted on by her owner who died suddenly and left Poppy in her grandson’s care. The grandson dumped her in the street on his way out of town. She is now behind bars at the county pound, and scheduled for euthanasia. The needle. Death. Robin and Mary race against time to save her.

The same wonderful narrator, Caitlin Williams, will be reading POPPY. Here is an excerpt from the book.

The Humane Society of Marathon County hosted a Book Signing/Book Fair last year just before Thanksgiving. The attendance was great, and I met some wonderful people there. Judy, a former manager of the Humane Society, told me this heartwarming story of a dog rescue.

In case this is the first time you’re tuning in to Read Along Radio, or just as a review, in the previous episodes, we met Robin Kould as he started his first day at a new school in a new life. He encountered two kids spray-painting a dog and tried to stop them, but ended up getting blamed for their crime. Robin wound up being assigned 100 hours of community service work at the local pound, getting a three-day suspension from school, and was required to tour the local jail. We got a glimpse of Robin’s special gift of being able to communicate with dogs. We also accompanied him as he toured the local jail as part of his court-assigned “disposition”. An incident with an inmate cut his tour short, but Robin experienced enough to know he never wants to be put there.

On Robin’s second try at a first day of school, he met Mary Yen, an eighth-grade classmate who wants to be a lawyer. He didn’t like her, but she is the only one in his class who talks to him. Robin has explained the incident that got him in trouble to his Uncle Damian and decided he wants to prove his innocence and clear his record. During his first attempt to do this, he learned how easy it was to jump to a wrong conclusion and embarrassed himself by accusing the wrong person. He finally managed to track down the real culprits. After hearing their story and learning that Bombo will be euthanized if Greg Peterson doesn’t get out of jail in time to claim his dog, Robin switches his focus to proving Greg’s innocence.

Robin and Mary exhaust all of their ideas for getting Greg Peterson out of jail in time to save Bombo. They haven’t found a way to get the dog adopted—even temporarily. Robin talked Judy, the manager of the pound, into letting him take Bombo for a last walk. Things got pretty exciting when Bombo pulled him all over town. Robin ended up having to call Mary for help because he couldn’t make Bombo return to the shelter. Mary explained how she got Judge Fairchild to send the police to help Robin, and we learned who really robbed the liquor store.

In this episode, we get a wrap-up of what happened after the thief was caught, and Mary takes the credit for being the hero.
