  • Ep 410: Scaling for Success and Community. How Growth in Small, Relationship-Driven Learning Environments Are Reshaping Education
    Mar 10 2026

When families hear the word microschool, they often picture something tiny, experimental, or unstructured. Others assume that if a school grows, it must lose the connection and personalization that made it special in the first place. In this episode, we gently challenge those assumptions and unpack a much bigger question: Does the size of a school matter—or does the structure of learning matter more?

Using real-world examples from growing learning environments like Lighthouse Learning Microschool, this conversation explores the difference between traditional education models and intentionally designed microschools, including what happens when a microschool scales without sacrificing relationships, culture, or individualized learning.

We talk about why many families are rethinking traditional school systems, how small learning environments support confidence, mastery, and emotional safety, and why growth doesn’t have to mean losing what makes a school feel personal. You’ll hear what doesn’t change as schools grow—strong student-teacher relationships, individualized pacing, clear communication with families, and a shared culture rooted in belonging.

This episode is especially helpful for parents who are:

    • Trying to explain their school choice to grandparents or extended family

    • Wondering if a nontraditional or hybrid model is “enough”

    • Navigating doubt, comparison, or fear around educational decisions

    • Searching for a learning environment where their child is truly known

At its core, this episode isn’t about convincing families to choose a microschool. It’s about helping parents ask better questions, understand their options, and feel confident choosing the environment that aligns with their child’s needs and their family’s values.

Because in education, scale doesn’t have to cost soul—and fit will always matter more than labels.----more----

  • Ep 408: The Excitement and Clarity of Designing a Clear Model! How Clarifying Your Model Transforms Enrollment, Confidence, and the Joy of Leading a Microschool or Hybrid
    Feb 24 2026

If your microschool or homeschool hybrid feels heavier than it should—if enrollment feels harder than expected, teachers seem unsure, or parents look confused even when they like you—this episode is for you.

Many schools don’t struggle because they lack passion or care. They struggle because the school model has become buried under too many programs, too many acronyms, and too many well-intended solutions added without clarity. In this episode, we explore how designing a clear school offer—not adding another program—can transform enrollment, alignment, confidence, and sustainability.

Designed for parents and teachers building microschools or homeschool hybrids, this conversation walks through why program stacking quietly undermines trust, how clarity strengthens teacher confidence, and why parents enroll when they understand how learning actually works. You’ll learn the difference between a program and a model, how intentional school design creates stability for students, and why simplifying your systems can feel both liberating and exciting as a leader.

We also reframe branding as leadership—not marketing—and explain how shared language, clear pathways, and a well-named model help families self-select, reduce confusion, and build trust. When a school can clearly explain who it serves, how students learn, and what stays consistent, enrollment becomes easier and leadership feels lighter.

If you’re building a microschool, launching a homeschool hybrid, or refining an alternative education model, this episode will help you clarify your offer, regain confidence, and design a school that feels intentional instead of overwhelming.----more----

  • Ep 407: Middle School Is Where Kids Get Lost—or Find Themselves: What Parents and Teachers Must Demand From a Middle School Program That Actually Builds Readiness for High School and Life
    Feb 17 2026

Middle school is often where confident, curious kids begin to disappear—academically, socially, emotionally, or all three. For many families, this stage becomes confusing, overwhelming, and full of uncertainty about whether their child is truly being prepared for what comes next.

In this episode, we take an honest look at why traditional middle school models so often fail young adolescents—and what parents and educators should expect and demand from a middle school program instead. Drawing from personal experience as a teacher, a middle school mom, and a microschool leader, this conversation redefines what middle school can be when it’s intentionally designed around ownership, purpose, belonging, and preparedness.

You’ll learn why grades 6–8 are a critical turning point for confidence and identity, what students actually need during early adolescence, and how to evaluate whether a middle school model is genuinely preparing students for high school—not just keeping them busy. This episode offers clarity, language, and practical insight for families and educators navigating one of the most important seasons of a child’s educational journey.

If you’ve ever wondered why middle school feels so hard—or how it could be done better—this episode will change the way you think about what’s possible.

  • Ep 406: The Real Conversations Microschool Founders Are Having Right Now: Enrollment Struggles, Tuition Guilt, Teacher Contracts, Nonprofit Finances, and Protecting the Vision of Your School
    Feb 10 2026
There’s a certain point in the microschool journey where dreaming turns into deciding. Where your heart for families meets the reality of tuition, payroll, enrollment systems, and leadership responsibility. And lately, inside Microschool Masterminds, the conversations have been real, raw, and deeply reflective. In this episode, I’m sharing what teachers and microschool leaders are actually wrestling with right now — the questions that don’t always make it to social media, but live quietly in our heads as we lay foundations for sustainable schools. We talk openly about enrollment and the tension of raising tuition when families are already stretched thin, especially in nonprofit and faith-based microschool models. I share my own struggle with wanting to help everyone while also honoring the reality that even mission-driven schools must operate as healthy businesses — and why seeking sponsors, donors, and scholarships is not failure, but foresight. We also dive into nonprofit financial systems, including common questions around QuickBooks and Aplos, grant readiness, and why clarity matters more than choosing the “perfect” software. If you’re building a microschool or homeschool hybrid and trying to get your finances organized for long-term growth, this conversation will resonate deeply. Another major theme in this episode is staffing and leadership — specifically navigating teacher contracts, renewals, and the uncomfortable realization that your school may be drifting away from its original vision. We explore whether that drift is a hiring issue, a clarity issue, or a documentation issue — and how leaders can lovingly course-correct without burning bridges. For those in their first year or preparing to launch, I also address foundational questions around first-year tuition, part-time teacher pay, prep days, hosting a microschool in your home, and how to stay realistic without losing your peace. One of the most important parts of this episode is a compassionate discussion around capacity, boundaries, and integrity — including how to lovingly and ethically communicate with families when you don’t yet have the services to support certain learning needs. This is not about exclusion, but about honesty, sustainability, and doing what’s best for children and leaders alike. We also briefly touch on compliance topics like background checks, spouses working in the school, and the importance of healthy systems — especially as more men step into education and leadership roles within microschool communities. If you’re a teacher thinking about starting a microschool, a homeschool hybrid leader in the early years, or a seasoned founder trying to protect the heart of what you’ve built — this episode will remind you that you are not behind. You are building. And foundation seasons are meant to feel this way.----more---- Microschool Masterminds: skool.com/microschool-masterminds Every Thursday from 12-1 pm (EST), join Makenzie Oliver, microschool founder, VELA connector, and instructional coach, along with other founders, parents, and dreamers, as we connect, inspire, and progress through the challenges and celebrations of starting, running, and growing a microschool! • Ep 405: Choosing a School That Actually Works For a Student: What Research Says Children Need to Learn
    Feb 3 2026

Parents are overwhelmed with school choices—and most are being asked to decide without the information that actually matters.

Research shows students don’t learn more because a teacher is certified, experienced, or passionate. They learn more when they believe their teacher knows what they’re doing, cares about them, and can actually help them succeed.

In this episode, we break down one of the highest-impact findings in all of education research: teacher credibility, with an effect size of 0.90—meaning it has more impact on learning than class size, homework, or school type.

We’ll explore what builds or breaks credibility, why student perception matters more than adult intention, and the seven evidence-based conditions students need to learn—including safety, belonging, emotional regulation, appropriate challenge, relevance, feedback, and consistency.

If you’re questioning traditional school, exploring alternatives, or trying to understand what actually helps children learn, this episode will give you clarity, confidence, and research-backed insight to make informed decisions.
