Not sure the point of the story

The story starts strong with the introduction of all these characters, and as the story progress you get to know more about these characters. While there's a tragic ending for most of them, there's one character with a lot of mystery as to why they received the sentence for the crime they were prosecuted for. I thought the story would delve into the why, but it doesn't even touch the why. It just ends....which leaves me asking why this prisoner's sentence is so harsh. Surely that was a catalyst for the whole series of events, so figuring that out would have made the story make sense. Performance was great, but for the overall story, I expected a more complete storyline.
