The first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is in the books, and there weren't all that many upsets -- the Sweet 16 is looking pretty chalky. Sure, Texas is an 11 seed, but ... it's Texas, probably the most resource rich athletics department in the country. In fact, every member of the Sweet 16 comes from the top 5 conferences (football's Power 4 + Big East).

It made for a bit of a boring first couple of rounds, but with the best teams in the country now lined up, the Sweet 16 and beyond should be fantastic.

Why did it happen that way? And what does all this separation of the top teams mean for WSU?

After discussing that, we took a brief glimpse at spring football, which starts on Thursday for the Cougs under new coach Kirby Moore.

Plus, beer talk and a brief look at the baseball team.

  • David Riley won't be fired. But he should be. (Episode 248)

The basketball seasons are finally over, and we learned this week that David Riley will be back for at least one more year as head coach of the men's basketball team.

Needless to say, based on the show title ... we're not thrilled. There are a lot of reasons to believe things aren't likely to get better under Riley going forward, and the idea that he just doesn't have enough resources is honestly insulting. Resources aren't why the team blew so many games.

We break down all the reasons why Riley shouldn't be coaching the team next year before evaluating what his return probably means going forward.

Plus, beer talk and a brief look at women's basketball's performance in the WCC tournament, where they advanced farther than the men -- despite starting the tournament a whole round earlier.

  • WCC tournament preview! (Episode 247)

The WCC regular season has concluded, and the Cougs now know their postseason fate: After dropping the final two games of the season in uninspiring fashion -- making it six losses in seven games -- WSU finished 8th. That means they'll receive a "bye" into the second round of the WCC's long, funky tournament bracket, and they'll need five wins in five days to secure the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Crazier things have happened? At the very least, there remains an opportunity to win two, or even three, games, given the conference's mediocrity outside the top three teams.

Most of our conversation, though, revolves around David Riley's job security -- and more specifically, how and why the Cougs keep failing in the same kinds of ways.

Plus, beer talk and a brief look at women's basketball's draw in their WCC tournament, which is even worse than the men's!
