In this episode of The After Sermon, Daniel sits down with Michele to unpack the powerful encounter in Luke 7:36–50 where Jesus is invited to dinner at Simon the Pharisee’s house. What begins as a normal meal quickly becomes an unforgettable moment when a woman with a scandalous reputation enters the room, falls at Jesus’ feet, and expresses extravagant gratitude.

Daniel and Michele explore the contrast between Simon and the woman—two people who are both close to Jesus but respond in completely different ways. Michele reflects on the subtlety of Simon’s pride and how religious activity can sometimes mask a heart that doesn’t actually recognize its need for grace. At the same time, the woman’s vulnerability and bold worship reveal what happens when someone fully understands their need and receives forgiveness.

Their conversation also dives into a central idea from the message: “broke is broke.” Whether someone appears morally respectable or openly broken, both stand equally in need of the forgiveness Jesus offers. Daniel and Michele discuss how overconfidence in our goodness and obsession with our failures can both keep us from truly encountering Jesus.
