In this episode of the Physician Empowerment podcast, Dr. Wing Lim speaks with mortgage broker Robyn Fenske about mortgage fundamentals and lending strategies relevant to Canadian physicians and incorporated professionals. They review key concepts, including fixed versus variable mortgage rates, the impact of Bank of Canada rate decisions and bond yields, and how term selection relates to risk tolerance and financial planning. Robyn explains how brokers access multiple lenders to compare rates and terms, and why loyalty to a single bank may limit financial optimization.

Wing and Robyn also explore real estate investing considerations such as rental property financing, down payment requirements, and lender limits on the number of properties. Listeners will gain clarity on first-time homebuyer programs, tax-advantaged savings tools, and physician-focused lending programs that use projected income. The episode emphasizes the importance of long-term planning and aligning mortgage strategy with overall financial goals.

    About Robyn Fenske:

Robyn Fenske is a Canadian mortgage broker with a background in kinesiology and client-focused coaching. She transitioned into the mortgage industry during the COVID period, combining her interest in real estate investing with her experience working one-on-one with clients. Robyn specializes in helping professionals navigate mortgage financing, lending structures, and real estate strategies, with a focus on education and long-term financial outcomes.

In this episode, Dr. Wing Lim welcomes tax lawyer and Masterclass Faculty Member Jason Pisesky to review the 2026 federal tax updates and what they mean for Canadian physicians and incorporated professionals. While there were no sweeping tax reforms, Jason details moderate middle tax bracket cuts, the return of electric vehicle tax credits, and targeted changes aimed at curbing aggressive tax planning strategies. For physicians focused on year-end planning and tax optimization, this episode provides a practical overview of what has changed and what remains steady in the Canadian tax landscape.

Wing and Jason offer a comprehensive review of Canada’s registered accounts, including the RRSP, TFSA, First Home Savings Account, Registered Education Savings Plan, and Registered Disability Savings Plan. Jason outlines contribution limits, and he and Wing discuss tax treatment on withdrawal, matching grants, and planning opportunities such as the Home Buyers’ Plan and income splitting through spousal RRSPs. For medical professionals dealing with fluctuating income and long-term wealth planning, this episode reinforces the importance of understanding tax-advantaged accounts and coordinating with accountants and financial advisors. Having a stable financial team means making proactive decisions early in the calendar year rather than at tax filing season.

    About Jason Pisesky:

Jason is a tax lawyer with international accounting firm KPMG and a Physician Empowerment Masterclass Faculty Member. His practice background is extensive and includes personal and corporate tax planning as well as litigation and dispute resolution. Whether you are scaling up your practice or winding it down, proper coordination between a tax lawyer and your accountant can ensure you're doing it right.

In this episode of Physician Empowerment, Dr. Kevin Mailo speaks with Dr. Michelle Jackman, a Calgary-based pediatric obesity specialist, physician coach, and elite gravel cyclist, about sustaining momentum in medicine, leadership, wellness, and personal goals when the training is long and the rewards are delayed. They unpack the difference between inspiration and motivation, exploring the importance of clarifying your internal “why”. Internal motivation, comprised of values, meaning, and identity, tends to outlast external motivation, which focuses on validation, status, and expectations. Michelle Jackman explains that this is especially true during setbacks.

Dr. Mailo and Dr. Jackman examine how physicians are often driven by fear-based motivation and perfectionism, and how that can undermine performance and joy over time. Dr. Jackman shares practical strategies for shifting from harsh self-criticism to constructive self-coaching, a process that includes naming the “inner critic” and building self-awareness through curiosity, as well as practicing self-compassion. She highlights the often-missed performance tool of rest and recovery; practices like micro-meditations, journaling prompts, breathwork, yoga, and somatic awareness. They discuss resilience through setback planning and the value of building an “elite team” around oneself through support systems, such as mentors and coaching, that help sustain a meaningful long game.

About Michelle Jackman, MSc, MD, FRCPC, Pediatrics, Certified Executive Coach:

Over the past 25 years, Michelle Jackman has taken a few “scenic trips” on her path to a gratifying career in clinical Pediatrics—most notably a transition from General Surgery residency and a more recent move into Executive Coaching.

In 2020, Michelle worked with a physician executive coach. The experience was transformative and inspired her to pursue formal coaching training. She went on to complete her Executive Coach certification through Erickson International.

Michelle integrates coaching techniques into her clinical work as a practicing Pediatrician, collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and serving as a medical leader and educator. She finds this blend of coaching and clinical practice deeply gratifying and credits it as a catalyst for strengthening the effectiveness of care delivery for patients and their families.

Her Executive Coaching training has also supported greater satisfaction and alignment in her personal life—as a parent, competitive athlete, partner, and friend. In addition, Michelle is a Pediatric Obesity specialist and researcher with an MSc in exercise physiology, and she is qualified to support clients navigating decisions related to physical and mental performance goals.
