Although his imprisonment seems like something that would slow the gospel down, Paul shows the Philippians that it actually serves to advance the gospel. He rejoices because whether the Romans execute him or not, he will either be with Christ for eternity or advance Christ's gospel here and now. In fact, that is the purpose of Paul's time on Earth: advancing the gospel.
