  • ‘You’ve got a friend’ on World Mental Health Day
    Oct 10 2025

As part of volunteering for Shine Radio, we meet lots of very interesting people – sometimes outside of the Petersphere.

Jo Gray interviewed local musician Richard ‘Ricky’ Palmer at the Portsmouth leg of the Baton of Hope relay. He's a regular on The Local Showcase & was one of the baton bearers.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, Richard has released a reinterpreted cover version of ‘You’ve got a friend’. All proceeds will be donated to a local mental health charity. Jo was invited to the making of the music video. Always on the rove for interesting stories she couldn’t resist recording a chat with participant Nikki Coles – a former lady mayoress, who shares an insight into her public duty.

What’s apparent is how volunteering & helping others is good for your own mental health too.

We've shared a link to Ricky's single on our website.

  • Reassured but not wholly; response on Rowan Ward changes
    Oct 9 2025

Following an online meeting about the proposed change on the evening of 8 October - attended by 10 or so people including the office of Damian Hinds MP a public meeting was held at St Peter’s Hall in the afternoon of 9 October with about 12 people present plus people from the NHS.

Amongst those there were Councillors Jamie Matthews, Anne Stephenson and Chris Paige. Others included the Patient Participation Group of The Grange Surgery.

Wendy Rees Managing Director of the NHS Division responsible spoke.

The handouts/sides will be available on their website (see below).

They said they have been testing the model since May and report more at home care happening, no negative impact on hospital discharges or on local GPs or social care, nor ‘increased challenges faced by carers’.

Final proposals by the end of November at Council Overview and Scrutiny Committees.

Only Rowan ward affected - no impact on End of Life care, they say.
