This sermon explains that God has chosen certain people (election) and called them to salvation, and Christians should work hard to make sure they truly are among God's chosen people by examining their lives for evidence of genuine faith and good works. Spurgeon teaches that the way to be certain of your election is not through dreams or visions, but by living a godly life filled with faith, virtue, knowledge, patience, and love—these qualities prove you're truly saved. He warns that Christians who live carelessly will barely make it to heaven with fear and regret, but those who serve God faithfully will enter heaven joyfully with abundant rewards and the satisfaction of having helped others find salvation.
A sermon delivered by Charles Spurgeon on March 22, 1857.
