  • Vinyl Relics | 1968's The Travel Agency: The Album Psych Fans Argue About
    Feb 26 2026
Epysode 72: The Travel Agency by The Travel Agency. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we explore the self-titled album by The Travel Agency, a quietly adventurous record that drifted through the late-’60s underground and never quite found its audience. Blending folk-rock and studio psychedelia, the album feels like a band's debut record where they are trying to find their feet. Over the years, it's become a bit of a cult-classic for some, while others dismiss it as nothing more than a throwaway from the era. Take a listen and decide for yourself. I hope you dig The Travel Agency as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon for as little as $2/month using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @ farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===LINKS=== Fransisco Lupica interview from 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvFDqZHbSMM ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. • Only Three Lads: It's a Beach Party with Acapulco Lips!
    Feb 24 2026
Cowabunga, Moondoggie! Let's pack up the woody and go Huey at the beach! Whaddya say? Yeah, call it bad timing, call it wishful thinking, or call it wistful nostalgia for the bygone summer, but this week we’re having an O3L Beach Party! We’ve got all of the essentials with us, except the most crucial thing: the tunes, man! We each need to pack up some albums for the beach to play on our state-of-the-art O3L boombox. There’s a new album that definitely needs to come to this beach blanket bingo : Now, by Seattle’s Acapulco Lips on Killroom Records. It’s a euphoric mix of fuzz n’ Farfisa garage rock swagger, heady reverb-drenched psych, sinewy surf rock, and girl group charm that crackles with restless energy and reckless cool. It carries on admirably from, and improves upon (in our opinion), their self titled record from 2016. Get it on cool tangerine & lemon galaxy colored vinyl from acapulcolips.bandcamp.com or stream it - of course, if you’re one of those new fangled fancy pants - but you’ve gotta hear this record. Joining us for this rad rager is none other than the aforementioned Acapulco Lips - vocalist/bassist Maria-Elena Herrell, guitarist Christopher Garland, and drummer Jordan T Adams. • Ugly American Werewolf in London: Metallica - Master of Puppets
    Feb 21 2026
By 1986, Metallica's assault on the music establishment and eardrums was in full force. Their previous album, Ride The Lightning, had caught the attention of Elektra Records who signed them to an 8 record deal. Though they refused to make videos, weren't on MTV and didn't really release singles, the band gained fans anywhere they played live and through an underground tape trading community. They were establishing thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax through constant touring and a relentless lifestyle. The boys really upped their game on Master of Puppets through stronger vocals from James Hetfield, more punishing riffs and melodic (and sometimes spacey) bass from Cliff Burton. The opener Battery sets the tone for this very influential album before giving way to the 8+ minute title track. True to form, Metallica offered up an instrumental in Orion which was heavily influenced by the classical training of Cliff Burton. Songs about war (Disposable Heroes), fake evangelism (Leper Messiah), insanity Welcome Home (Sanitarium) make for one amazing heavy metal album, the likes of which the world hadn't seen. We talk about the songs, what they mean in the Metallica catalog, their tour for the record with Ozzy and of course the tragedy in Sweden that took the life of Cliff Burton. From underground band to being featured on Stranger Things, the journey of Master of Puppets is one for the ages.
