The injury-plagued Padres (17-9) lost for the 5th time in their last 7 games tonight, shut out (for the 2nd consecutive game) 1-0 by the Tampa Bay Rays in front of a sellout crowd at Petco Park.

Gavin Sheets reached base on a strikeout with one out in the bottom of the 9th inning, but Oscar Gonzalez was robbed by RF Kameron Misner, who made a sliding catch then got up and doubled pinch-runner Mason McCoy off 1st base. The Pads challenged both outs, but the calls were upheld and the game was all over. Just. Like. That.

Padres Ace Michael King (3-1) took his 1st loss of the season after allowing one (unearned) run in 5 innings while striking out 9 Rays' hitters. King (3-1) was pulled after throwing 90 pitches in 5 innings.

Shane Bay (3-0) pitched 7 sharp innings for the Rays, allowing just 4 singles while striking out 6.

Yandy Díaz hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the only run of the game for the Rays, who won their 3rd straight game.

Tampa Bay loaded the bases with no outs in the 3rd inning, on a throwing error by Xander Bogaerts and back-to-back singles, but King pulled it together and pitched through it, allowing only Díaz's sacrifice fly before getting the next 2 hitters by strikeout and popout.
