Acerca de esta escucha

Most people in the US support abortion access, but having nuanced conversations about restrictions and bans can seem impossible. Join two OB-Gyns on the front lines of abortion care as they make sense of the ever-evolving consequences of our government ceding the expert decision-making power of medical professionals to lawyers and courts. Each short episode features stories and science from physicians, researchers, abortion-seekers and other expert witnesses to the impact on all of our lives. Whether you’re out drinking with the dudes, doing playground duty with other parents, or being stared down by Uncle Bob, we’ve got your back.

Brought to you by Dr. Beverly Gray, Dr. Jonas Swartz and Jane Marie’s Little Everywhere.

In 2023, 1 out of 5 patients seeking abortion care traveled to another state for care. When access to care was restricted for folks in North Carolina, the next closest state for care was Virginia. People now travel from all over the Southeast to receive care in a variety of locations in Virginia. Since the physician workforce in Virginia is not able to meet that demand, doctors must also travel there to provide care. In this episode, Jonas and Bev first tell their stories of how they ended up doing this work and then they take you to a clinic in Virginia where care is provided with fewer restrictions and a little bit of trail magic.

I find too many (especially anti-abortion) discussions of this topic gloss over the fact that pregnancy is not health neutral. Having actual doctors discuss this subject and their informative guests has been invaluable. I’ve read at least two books by their guests to help me understand abortion rights and why it’s an ethical standpoint to provide abortion access. I suggest more people listen to this podcast and read works by their guests.
