The Life That Never Was That Should Have Been

    Stephen Patrick Heale

This is the life that could have been if he had not died,

A few hours after he was born.

I entered this world on a 20th December 1956 to the sound of Elvis Presley singing ‘All Shook Up’ on the radio, closely followed by the hushed voice of a concerned nurse.

Having been shook up and whacked on the backside I was introduced to my mum. For just a few tormented hours I lay cradled in her loving arms. I felt the familiar beat of her heart and the new sensation of fresh warm tears as they landed on my sallow face. For a brief moment I was aware of light and shade and through blurred vision could make out the shape of the face looking down into mine.

Moving, seeing, hearing, thinking, feeling and breathing, all felt confusing and exhausting to me, so I ceased participating in any of those actions and returned to the blissful state of sleep.

My surviving brother throughout his young and also adult life had vivid dreams featuring myself, it was as though I were still alive but in a parallel universe, the story was written of my life, had I lived.
