    THE FINAL NAME
 A Mick & Mack Mystery
Inspired by the unsolved 1962 murder of Julie Wolanski

She thought she was going to a school exam.

    She never came home.

    Toronto, 1952.
When sixteen-year-old Julie Wozniak vanishes after receiving a call from a man claiming to be a doctor with the Board of Education, Detectives Mick McCathie and Mack MacNeely are drawn into the most chilling case of their careers.

The caller knew Julie’s name. Her school. Her academic record.

And she’s not the only one.

As Eve Whitmore uncovers whispers from deep inside the intelligence community and Johnny Chandler traces the trail to a long-forgotten name, Mick & Mack begin to see the terrible shape of the truth. This wasn’t a random crime. This was ritual. Calculated. And very familiar.

A boarding house in North Toronto.
 A box of scarf fragments.
A smile that never reaches the eyes.

One man may hold the answers.
But how many girls did he reach before someone finally said no?

Conclusive. Shattering. And not quite the end.
The final installment in the Lily Moore trilogy wraps the case… but leaves one name still echoing in the silence.

    Some doors stay open.
Some ghosts never leave.
And some questions still wait in the dark.

Unraveling the Christine Jessop Mystery: A Story of Loss, Injustice, and Redemption Episode 2 – Justice Delayed: The Fight for Truth in the Christine Jessop Case

A nine-year-old girl vanishes from her quiet Ontario town, her dreams snuffed out in a brutal crime that shatters a community. A neighbor is accused, convicted, and condemned—but what if the real killer is still out there?

In this gripping episode of Ontario Cold Cases – Canada’s True Crime Podcast, host Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations unravels the haunting mystery of Christine Jessop’s 1984 murder—a case that became one of Canada’s most infamous wrongful convictions. Step into the courtroom for Guy Paul Morin’s harrowing trials, where flimsy evidence and biased justice led to a life sentence for an innocent man. Witness the groundbreaking DNA test that set him free, exposing a cascade of investigative failures that let the true murderer slip through the cracks.

From the scathing Kaufman Report that reshaped Canadian law to a stunning 2020 breakthrough in genetic genealogy, this is a story of relentless pursuit—revealing Calvin Hoover, a family friend hiding in plain sight, as Christine’s killer. For her grieving family, closure comes at a cost; for Morin, redemption can’t erase a decade lost.

Join us for a chilling journey through loss, injustice, and hard-won truth. Justice Delayed is a cautionary tale of a system’s flaws and the resilience of those who fight for answers. Will you stand with them?

Killer’s Guilty Plea Nets 6 Years In Jail Ashley Lafrance (Update, June 4, 2025)

Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll Investigations and this is an Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast, special edition and an update on the murder of Ashley Lafrance from an article by Brad Hunter in the Toronto Sun.

A Kirkland Lake mom whose daughter was brutally slain doesn’t believe justice has been served.

    Not by a long shot.

The last of a trio of accused involved in the killing of Ashley Lafrance, 29, on Sept. 8, 2022, has been sentenced to six years in prison. The two others already have pleaded guilty.

Darcy Shail, 43, copped to manslaughter in Haileybury court on Monday. Minus time served, he will be out of jail in around five months. He apologized to Lafrance’s family, but to her mother, it fell short.

“He can’t apologize to Ashley, so why bother apologizing to me?” her mom, Marion Effenberger, told CTV Northern News. “It’s just killing our family … And before long, they’ll be walking the streets.”

In the agreed statement of facts, Shail and two others — Chantal Aube and Mark Anderson — drove Lafrance to a wooded area where she was beaten unconscious. The slaying was over drugs, and the trio left Lafrance to die in the woods alone. All four were high on fentanyl at the time.

After his arrest, Shail helped cops locate Lafrance’s remains. An autopsy revealed that she had suffered a cracked skull but her actual cause of death was never discovered.

“He knew where her body was,” Effenberger said. “Why didn’t he say before? Why did he have to wait so many days and then we could have proved how she died?” Shail’s lawyer outlined his client’s descent into drug addiction and associating with the “wrong people.”

Aube pleaded guilty to being an accessory to murder, while Anderson pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Both are serving time in prison — Aube will be released in June and Anderson will be out later this year.
