Stage actress Christina Bancroft hires Michael for protection for three days, until the play ends in New Orleans. She says someone is trying to kill her, but she does not know who, or why. After the interview, Michael stood in the wings of the theater watching the play. Near the end, two men walked over to Michael and introduced themselves; Hamilton Dunn, the director of the play, and Frank Harper, Christina's business manager. Later, Michael was talking to Christina in her dressing room. He asks her "why do you think someone is trying to kill you? What evidence do you have?" Based upon her reply, Michael says "you are lying to me. You know who is after you, and you know why. So, let's have it."

Mr. George Brophy and his daughter Anita are involved in a fatal car accident. They are unharmed, but the other driver is not so lucky. Witnesses at the scene of the accident identify the other driver as the son of Johnny Michaelis, one of the biggest gangsters in London. The next day, the story of the accident makes the newspaper headlines, but George Brophy's name is left out of the story, because the reporters know that Johnny Michaelis would be looking for him. Brophy pays a visit to Peter Troy to hire him for protection. Peter says that he is definitely not interested. Then, Brophy says that the protection is not for himself, but for his twenty-one year old daughter Anita. He says that all you have to do is get her on the 11 o'clock plane to New York. Brophy then shows Peter a picture of Anita. Of course, that changes his mind about the job.

Matt Cvetic is in a meeting with Comrade Rivchenko, who asks if he knows anything about an "electronic brain", or a man named Duane Fleming. Matt says "the electronic brain is supposed to be a super calculating machine for mathematics, but I do not know anyone named Duane Fleming". Rivchenko says "Duane Fleming knows everything about electronic calculators, and, he is on our side. Comrade Fleming has been engaged to aid the installation of the newest electronic brain at the university, and you will be his assistant. The U.S. Military relies heavily on machines like this. It's calculations can help to put advanced aircraft in production years ahead of schedule. You will assist Comrade Fleming to make sure that the new machine renders the smallest possible service to the U.S. Military".
