  • Ohio Supreme Court will hear gun rights case, Ohioans fight for unpaid federal unemployment money
    Oct 10 2024

The Ohio Supreme Court is on the ballot this November, just as the court has agreed to hear a case involving gun rights.

On the October 9 edition of Ohio Has Issues with Stephanie Haney and Mike Polk Jr., Cleveland.com's Jake Zuckerman returns to break down a case that will come before Ohio's highest court. It's about whether it's permissible to outlaw guns in establishments that serve alcohol, and it's based on a case where one person got shot in the neck.

Plus, attorney Marc Dann of the Dann Law firm explains why he's pursuing a case against the state and Governor Mike DeWine to try to recover $960 million for 320,000 Ohioans who were out of work between July 2021 and September 2021.

We share the latest polling when it comes to Ohio's Senate race between Sen. Sherrod Brown and challenger Bernie Moreno, a few interesting facts about Ohio's races for the 7th and 11th congressional districts, and how Vice Presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz are making news with their recent comments about abortion and the electoral college.

And we update you on the law that was passed during Ohio's special General Assembly session this summer and what it means for green card holders in the state.

  • What the Vice Presidential debate means to Ohio voters, new abortion data released, and more
    Oct 3 2024

With the Vice Presidential debate behind us, the performances by the candidates are being analyzed intensely as both major political parties look to strengthen their chances to win the White House in November,

On the October 2 edition of Ohio Has Issues with Stephanie Haney and Mike Polk Jr, we look at key moments between Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz that may resonate with Ohio voters. Republican strategist Jordan Ohler of Swing State Strategies and Cuyahoga County Democratic Party Chair David Brock chat with Stephanie and Mike, to give their takes on what impact the VP debate may have in our state. We also share what swing-state voters told the Washington Post about their voting choices, before and after watching the debate.

Speaking of debates, it seems less and less likely that we'll see one between Senatorial candidates Sherrod Brown and Bernie Moreno. Stephanie and Mike break down why that would be so strange, with the help of Cleveland.com reporting from Jeremy Pelzer.

Plus, Statehouse News Bureau reporter Jo Ingles comes on the show again, this time to talk about new abortion data about Ohio, fallout for Moreno over his recent abortion remarks, and why Democrats in the Ohio House of Representatives what to make changes to how the Ohio Ballot Board operates. That last topic is wrapped up with Issue 1, the proposed redistricting amendment, which Stephanie breaks down to try to clear up any confusion about what will happen if it passes.

  • Donald Trump, JD Vance may face criminal charges over false claims about Haitians eating pets
    Sep 25 2024

Former President Donald Trump is no stranger to criminal charges as a 34-time convicted felon, and his running mate Sen. JD Vance may be joining him in an Ohio courtroom soon, if an advocacy group for Haitians have their way.

On the September 25 edition of Ohio Has Issues, Stephanie Haney and Mike Polk Jr. look into the Haitian Bridge Alliance's filing seeking the charging and arrest of Trump and Vance in Clark County Municipal Court with the help of their attorney, Subodh Chandra. We also welcome back friend of the show Andrew Tobias, who recently left Cleveland.com to cover state politics and government for Signal Ohio, and is here to give us a rundown of the absurd amount of money being spent on political advertising in the Buckeye State.

Plus, we look at comments made by Senatorial candidate Bernie Moreno where he referred to female voters focusing on abortion access this election as "crazy," prompting Republican Nikki Haley to wondering if he's "trying to lose the election." Incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown responds to Moreno's comment, and gains the endorsement of the United Auto Workers union.

In our Ohio Roundup, we fill you in on where things stand in Portage County, where the Sheriff's Office won't be used for election security after Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski made controversial remarks about writing down addresses where residents are displaying signs supporting Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential race. Zuchowski is up for re-election this year, and due to his statements, the Akron Beacon Journal editorial board is encouraging Portage County residents not to vote for him.

We also let you know where the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus stands on the proposed redistricting amendment and why they're unhappy about the language that will appear to summarize the initiative on Ohioans' ballots.

Remember, the deadline to register to vote for the upcoming November 5 election is October 7!
