On November 23, 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 became the scene of a deadly hijacking that ended in tragedy just off the coast of the Comoros Islands. Three men seized control of the Boeing 767 and demanded to be flown to Australia—despite the plane only carrying enough fuel for its next scheduled stop in Nairobi.
After hours of failed negotiations, the aircraft ran out of fuel and crash-landed in the Indian Ocean. Of the 175 people on board, 125 died. Thanks to the captain’s attempt to ditch close to shore, dozens were rescued by locals and tourists.
This episode examines how a mid-air hostage situation spiraled into one of the most haunting aviation disasters of the 1990s—and the bravery, loss, and hard lessons that followed.
